The problem I had was with his declaring that (a) they were invented purely to try and make "science" look silly (as opposed to being e.g. questions inquiring into what it means to be human) and (b) that they are intended to have definitive answers (it's a little bit ike Zag and Pablo's argument elsewhere about where the line comes between a consumption tax and an income tax.) |
So, in other words, you agree with ME. _________________ All religions are the same - Guilt....just with different holidays. |

I'd be more inclined to describe it as Dr. William Lane Craig demonstrates his lack of understanding of science. But to each his own.
Besides participating in ridiculous circular arguments claiming that science is just a big circular argument, he then goes on to claim that the Theory of Relativity is based on the ASSUMPTION that the speed of light is fixed. He argument is clever, in that it focuses in on something that most people don't understand, he states some falsehoods about it that most people do not know enough to see through, and then he draws conclusions from his falsehoods.
Just to set the record straight, the Theory of Relativity came about because our experimental observations of the speed of light were that they always seemed the same, whether we were moving towards the source of light or away from it. This seemed terribly counter-intuitive, and was quite a conundrum. The more we measured and experimented, the more the results did not come out as you would expect using a classic (i.e. Newtonian) analysis. It wasn't until Einstein came up with the thought that, "What if the speed of light IS a constant, and TIME actually fluctuates?" that he was able to come up with equations that matched the reality that we had already measured.
Science: Measure reality the best we can. Try to define the nature of reality in such a way that it fits what we have measured.
Not Science: Imagine the reality we would like. When pesky reality (as measured) does not agree with our definition, blame the measurement tools. |

Yeah yeah... Science has already been scientifically proven to not be a circular argument.

Not safe for work and will never be a classic, but this certainly captures the mood of things here in Ireland, now that the IMF have dropped in for a visit.

Really liked that one, Pablo. Couldn't help but get a little choked up while watching, have bookmarked it to show parents. Thanks!
Not much of a follow up to Pablo's.
But am always on the lookout for a jk, found some humor in this.

Hate to double post here but just couldn't wait to show this one. I admit this video does not cater to the holiday spirit, treating others as you'd like to be treated. But then again, so what? It's funny as hell. And that's more important. Besides, golfers are snobs, aren't they? And they're wimps. (have you ever seen a golfer with a hairstyle like casinopete?)
For this video you will need some shag carpeting. So you can have some carpet loops to clutch while rolling on the floor. Here's golf course air horn |

| Wow! I like the comment that the hard part is psyching yourself up, convincing yourself that you WANT to solo the wall. That's another way of saying 'turning off the part of your brain that tells you not to do ridiculously stupid things.' |

Before he climbed that wall (Half Dome) in 2 hrs 50 minutes, I think the record was like 2+ days or something like that. The first guys that climbed it in 1957 or so took over 5 days. _________________ All religions are the same - Guilt....just with different holidays. |

Pitons. Yes, it took a lot of time. It didn't occur to them that it was humanly possible to climb this wall any other way. I have friends who climb and when I tell them about this guy, they don't believe me. I've had to show this video to several people to convince them I wasn't making it up. _________________ All religions are the same - Guilt....just with different holidays. |

San Francisco in 1906, days before devastating earthquake.
The video below is titled "A Trip Down Market Street", lives up to its name, a 13 minute trip from 8th Street down Market Street to the Ferry Building just days before the great quake of 1906.
You'll see a vibrant metropolis full of cars, bikes, horses, cable cars and people traversing Market St.
The detective story behind the film clip is almost as interesting as what it contains, will omit that however at risk of making this OT description excessively long.
If anyone's interested, I can post the story.
(Please note that there are rolling frames and a slight stall in the early part of the film which end at the 1 minute 40 second mark, but it's still remarkable and worth seeing, a black and white window back in time, ghostly souls long passed away)
look at the cars, how everyone is dressed, the orderly yet chaotic flow of it all |

One of my favorite comedians is (was) Richard Jeni. He's gone for about 4 years and I didn't know.

Frustrated at the lack of new Doctor Who episodes, I went hunting around the web and found THIS GEM! http://www.crossingthewhoniverse.com/An-Unearthly-Child.html The very first season of Doctor Who, made in 1963! They stream poorly, so the trick is to start several of them, pause them, and then go do something else while they load.
Edit: Wow, the first doctor was quite the jerk, and rather inept. |

I've been a Dr fan since about 1977 (the year I was born) and I've never heard the realm refereed to as the "whoniverse."
