So, there's a distinct possibility that MeeStee and I may be spending 3 weeks in Europe this summer. We're quite, quite excited. And I'm sure everyone in Europe is now quite, quite terrified.
Nothing's really set in stone yet...so far, all we know is we'll be in England, Ireland, and Scotland. And maybe some other places. Or not, we'll see. I'll keep everyone posted as more info comes up; we'll need lots of suggestions of places to see, possible GLers to visit, and what/where to eat (I'm a little nervous about that last one, I gotta tell you). _________________ "I have an everyday religion that works for me: love yourself first, and everything else falls into line." --Lucille Ball |

Here's the only useful information I have:
"Bubble and squeak" is food. "Twig and berries" is not. |

| If you want to meet and/or stay with locals while you're travelling, I recommend www.couchsurfing.com . If you join up there I reckon you could find a free bed just about anywhere that you wanna go. Or if you prefer, just a local contact who would help you out with advice or show you the sights. The site works well - you can ensure you're not dealing with a weirdo by looking at a person's profile, listed friends and references before you make contact with them. |

I'll chip in to buy a box you can sleep in down the Strand. Soup wagon arrives at 11pm with unsold Marks & Sparks sarnies and hot tea. Marvelous, and free too.
If you do go to London.....
DO NOT, EVER, eat at any Benjy's outlets.
Witherspoons pubs are atmosphere free and clinical. They do not represent the real Pub feel.
NEVER give money to beggers in the street or buy sprigs of heather from old women.
Always check your change from shops run by Mediterranean looking people. The London saying of "Thieving Arabs" hold a lot of truth.
Black Cabs cost a lot of money, especially when most London sights are within walking distance of each other.
There are no Jaywalking laws in Blighty, so wander away!
The Post Office gives one of the best exchange rates available, better than the chain of 'Bureau de Change' found within London.
DO NOT eat hotdogs/hamburgers from street carts/stalls, stick to Maccy D or Bugger King.
We British absolutely love to queue for things so do not queue jump, it's rude and liable to get you abused by old women.
We do not go around singing in the style of Dick van Dyke, nor is there a constant fog over London. |

Ha, such a Northerner ye be, Aga
but also...
Don't buy anything remotely Brit-touristy, like crappy little flags or mini double-decker London buses. If you want a true piece of Britain to take home, you'd be better off with a brick, or a framed ASBO, or something.
WEtherspoons (with an E, Aga ) may be the most clinical, un-pub place you can get to in the country without resorting to a dentist's suregery, but it's CHEAP and has LOTS OF BOOZE. Seeing as how the exchange rate's not too great, it's a decent choice for a meet-up... there's one in my town, woo coincidences! ^_^
Whatever you do, do NOT go anywhere near a bus. They're the most fucking awful, unreliable, icky and cold mode of public transport we've got. Even the London Underground at least means you don't have to speak to the driver.
Come visit Kd! *looks hopeful* _________________ Guess who's back, back again, Kd's back, tell a friend. |

Thanks so much for all the advice...I'm sure it will come in handy. And yes, we should totally do some kind of meetup. That would rock harder than a...hard, rocking thing. _________________ "I have an everyday religion that works for me: love yourself first, and everything else falls into line." --Lucille Ball |

If the dates are good and I'm feeling sober, I'm willing to be a guide for a day or so around London to ya. Also, I have a nice beat up old jalopy which can be used as a taxi for longer trips, as long as you don't mind sitting in chewed sweets, chocolate wrappers and crisps (potato chips). Alas, with wifey being not so well I am unable to host, but can advise/help/ferry on anything to do with London and the South East of Blighty.
btw
KD lives up north, and you really don't wanna go up them there parts without a tetanus jab. |

Curse you Aga, ever since I saw this I've had that blasted "Feed the birds, tuppence a bag" song from Mary Poppins stuck in my head. |

I think the plan now is we're going to London, then Scotland, then Ireland, then Amsterdam. No set dates or anything yet.
Thanks for all the advice! |

It will work out cheaper doing it in reverse. Flying to Dublin, then Dublin to Glasgow/Edinburgh, then Jockland to one of the London Airports, then London to Amsterdam.
or
even cheaper.......
Fly to Dublin, tour Ireland, then ferry from Belfast to Stranraer, tour of Scotland, train from Glasgow to London, tour London, Aga's taxi service from London to Harwich then ferry from harwich to Hook of Holland, get bored in Hook of Holland until train takes you to Amsterdam (Or Hennie offers to taxi you from there).
Marvelous. |

*sigh* Why is it people who visit England only want to see London? Sure, it's our capital city, but it's not like it's the nicest, friendliest, or even safest place in the country... but still.
If you're going there, I know of a street that has a second-hand Japanese bookshop and some snack places, so maybe we can meet up there. Depends when you want to come over. A little out of my way (I live SMACK in the middle of the country, as far from the sea as you can realistically get) but it's you two, so I don't mind. ^_^ _________________ Guess who's back, back again, Kd's back, tell a friend. |

Awh...we wub you too, Kd.
This trip is sorta being based around people MeeStee's dad works with, which is why we're going through London. I'm so excited...places to visit, people to see, GLers to pester...whee!! _________________ "I have an everyday religion that works for me: love yourself first, and everything else falls into line." --Lucille Ball |

Meh...so, never mind, cancelled due to lack of funds. Gonna try for next year though, so you may not be rid of us yet. _________________ "I have an everyday religion that works for me: love yourself first, and everything else falls into line." --Lucille Ball |
