I like it. But them icons on the left made the width of messages smaller. Maybe better back up top.

I don't hate the new style, though it is a little too busy, with all the icons on every note. The most important thing is to keep the nice, snappy response. I would rarely have to wait more than a second to get a discussion page. To me, this is far more important than being pretty.

I really don't know where to post this, and it's not worthy of it's own thread.

There is a split topic icon. I didn't want to test it and break it, so I wondered what does it do? Is it necessaery?

It's for mods only. It allows you split a topic into two topics -- you select which messages to "break off", and tell it what subject to put on the thread.

I'm with Huey on this one... I prefer to have full width for the forum messages and the menu icons on the top of the page, maybe a bit smaller than their current size.

phpbbpbhbb (I can never remember it) is fine, but I concur with the opinion of others, that the icons should be at the top (as they were on the old board, thus allowing a wider thread Revenge most foul!

Like everyone else said, with the icons on the side, it rates about a 2.5. Put them where they belong and it'll be a full 3.

Most important sticking points for the new look:

  • Sidebar icons belong to top. In frame/layer if you must keep them visible at all time.
  • Put back the link to the chat room there too.
  • Kill all white bars

The white bars tween msgs in reply window's topic review. And for that matter the silvery ones in the forum list page that don't quite fit the table length.

I voted fair, but it's more of a 2.5.

Things I would change:

* The blue at the top is too dark. Might be more bearable if the text was white instead of black, not sure.

* On the mail page, the grey in the left column is too dark or something.

* The icons do not work with this color scheme. I don't even particularly like them on subsilver, but they're bearable there.

* Some of the light green/red from the old forum to break up the blueness might be nice. Not sure though. Revenge most foul!

* The silver-blueish-fading-to-white bars clash with the other colors. Might look better if the grey wasn't there. Just too many colors that are almost the same but not quite.

the icon next to the profile link is black and i'm white. If you could have something in our profile to choose white and black and tan(like asian and eskamo and such) that could change that i would be satisfied but don't worry about it if you have more important stuff to do. Other than that and what was already said I got no complaints, just some getting use to.

I'll get used to this. My biggest complaint other than the icons being across the top is the wasted space with the icons and extraneous information that appear in every post.

Steamline the icons so they're slim - new topic and post reply are the worst. Why do the contact icons (AIM, WEB) etc have to be here in every post, as well as the location, post count and joined date on the side.

Why can't all these things be in a link to our profile? I know it makes it convenient, but it's too much.

I think only the Private Message button should be on the left, and a link to the profile for everything else. Let the profile open in a new window.

Wow, too many people are hung up on changing any little detail from the old GL. Traditionalists!!! Cannibal

I'm used to other phbb sites, so I welcome all the new things and slight changes. The two things I agree with are the immediate move of the side icons to the top and even though I didn't notice it until it was pointed out, I don't like the white bar breaks between posts in the review window.

Ant, you mentioned something about the mods only applying to this skin. How much trouble is it to add them to other skins?

I would be willing to work on an "old school" skin, if anyone is interested. I need to remember how to do the skin thing anyway, so I can finish my skin on mafiascum. Revenge most foul!

Not too much trouble. The changes to the theme just include adding support for the password box, etc, and I can just export the settings of this template anyway. What's an old school theme?

I disagree with Beartalon, Duphrates and macros. All that space devoted to name was always quite pointless. No avatars, no real idea who I'm responding to, what good is it then? Same goes with the various buttons at bottom. Both are fast, efficient and encouraging contact. Btw, a gender indicator would save us lots of confusion and corrections. I know amb for one would appreciate it.. Wink

But if it's only a name you want, then just stick it bolded in the "posted:.. Subject.." line, and save us about a quarter of total scrolling.

Talking of saving on scrolling, perhaps the navbar could be both on top and bottom of page. Not that anyone actually uses it more than once per session on avg, but anyhow..

I gave it a 5. I'm all about change.

It amuses me that before the switch, people were complaining about not being able to implement all the features we want. Now people are complaining about too many features. For crying out loud.

I personally find it highly amusing 1 that people are complaining about:
a) Features we also had on the GL.
b) Features we wanted to implement on the GL anyway.
c) Features they can easily turn off.

Makes me wonder about those people's motives, you know?

2.5 here. I don't particularly like it at the moment, but this change really needed to happen.

Anyway, another vote for icons going at the top. About the clutter, well, it's really about keeping the features that are necessary and leaving those that aren't. "Moderated by: Moderators" - get rid of it (already voted to that effect in the other poll). Beyond that, it gets uglier - there are probably a hundred things I'd ditch that people will want to keep and vice versa. [for example... I find the "Views" column just as useless.]

To Termital -

It's not so much all the post count, location etc to the left, that I'm finding cluttered, it's the AIM, WWW, E-Mail, Emoticon icons that I was referring to.

Can't all the personal stuff be linked in the Profile button?

ooooo!

I'm gone for a bit and my paradigm shifts. I hate it when that happens

Well, the new look is cool, but will take a bit of getting used to. I concur with several other people in that I believe that the nav icons should go back on top. Also, I am on a slow enough government computer as it is. Any way of speeding up things would be greatly appreciated by me and all other military folks (especially those deployes, ie AF).

And I miss the Private threads already, but I already read about how that issue is being worked.

Welcome back world. Play nice.
