When i click the "View posts since last visit" the results ore ordered by date+time.
I would find it more useful if i the results were ordered by forum then by time. This way i can focus on items from forums that interest me most.
Thoughts? Pros/Cons? Should i poll this? _________________ Will sell this place for beer |

| It doesn't matter one way or the other to me as I generally don't use the function, but my two cents are "Wait for someone (probably Antrax) to tell us how easy it would be to implement before setting up a poll." If it's a huge hassle for a bit of convenience I don't think it's worth it. |

It shouldn't be too difficult, but I can only get to it after passover (staying with my parents). _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

I completely forgot about this
I'll try to get it done over the weekend. Remind me again (PM is good) if it's not done by next week. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

Done. You may be amused to learn the changed eventually amounted to changing exactly one character in search.php _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

Ironically one character (d) should be missing from your post. _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |

it took me a second to see that something was weird when i looked at all the new posts. I made sure that this is not a random accident by looking at the 'last post' date and only then i dared looking at the Feature Requests / Site Problems to verify.
Thanks Antrax. _________________ Will sell this place for beer |

I use this function all the time. Now the post are out of order by time and sorted by forum?? Maybe it's just my opinion but this is awful Please change it back. I want the latest post, no matter what forum, at the top. I'll miss things otherwise. |

| The biggest problem I have with this is that now the most current posts are mixed throughout the "most recent posts", and since you have a huge list of recent posts that stay up there but you aren't interested in and aren't really new, now you have to look through the entire list each time rather than just look at the top. You might as well not have this feature if it works this way. |

I think its wonderful and dont change it back.
Whats nice about it is that (and i guess others) i dont care about the specific time of a post but rather that its new.
Once the posts are filtered to show only the new posts i'd rather see them ordered by forum because - for example - if i dont have time i skip the GLP or view only the VSP.
If this bothers many GLers then perhaps we should change it back.
We can also poll on this or set this as a user option (if its ok with admins of course). _________________ Will sell this place for beer |

Yes please make this some kind of user option if people like it this way. This new format is the most annoying thing I've come across so far and it doesn't make sense to me to have it that way.
On another note...since ths problem has been ignored everytime I brought it up in a separate thread...why doesn't the hover text showing the last post in a thread work from the most recent posts view like it does inside each forum? |

| I never use the feature, so it makes no difference to me. However, it does seem that if you want recent posts by forum, you can just click on the forums of interest, which makes the new "View posts since last visit" a bit redundant. |

Basically, because search.php != viewforum.php
Please poll on int, but making it a user option is something I'd rather avoid - it adds a field to the database, which I really loathe doing. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

| That's a good point Courk. If you're interested in only certain forums' new posts, then wouldn't it be better to just look into that forum? Why do an "all new posts" for the board unless that's what you want to see...and in which case they should be in date/time order. |

Logain,
can you explain what it is that bothers you about the feature. (I failed to understand it from your previous posts)
The suggestion made by Courk (thanks) ultimately causes more navigation for me. If i want to see three different forums then i have to navigate to three forums in order to achieve the same thing this feature gives me with a single navigation.
Courk,
If you never use this feature then how do you view all new posts? Perhaps Logain can try to use that same way
Antrax,
I completely agree about trying to avoid DB changes. Perhaps another option (don't know how complicated) is to have the columns sort-able. (This can be done by adding a parameter to the request which avoids the need to save anything per user.) _________________ Will sell this place for beer |

I don't really use this feature as I have to check every new post every time I log in. OCD, I don't recommend it.
Forgive my lack of knowledge about how php interacts with a db, but in sql terms 'order by' option makes perfect sense. It would require some added buttons and such which might make the page cluttered. And I have no idea how difficult that implementation would be. But it would be a nice feature.
Alternatively, shouldn't it be possible just to hard code "order by 'date'"? This might not override the forum sorting but at least they'd be in order, which seems to be the major concern. _________________ And he lived happily ever after. | I don't view all new posts. I only view the ones in forums I typically care about. If I'm running a mafia game, and the mafia forum has a new post, I'll check it in case it's in my game. VSP? I don't typically check that every time I visit, even if it has new posts. |

Nsof, the biggest problem I have is like I said before. The feature is basically useless now. It no longer shows me the most recent posts. I guess when you first come to the GL for the day it's acceptable that the posts are a jumbled mess now, but at least they're current. But after several minutes/hours of being on the GL, newer posts are now mixed in between older posts since they are sorted by category. I either miss stuff now or have to waste my time looking for new posts. Since I use this feature all the time this really sucks for me. All other boards I visit work the way this use to.
Please change it back |

I'd have to take a day or more off to see what you're talking about Logain (unless you can give screenshots).
However, I'd vote (if it's not difficult) for a rollback followed by further discussion. It's been over three years since we changed to the new format and this feature has not been adjusted that entire time. I'm sure there are many people, like Logain, who use it and expect it to work in a certain way.
Until we re-discuss and hopefully find a solution that fits everyone's needs, I think that a rollback would cause the least amount of frustration for users. _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |

You hang out in the GL too much
Seriously, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "newer posts are now mixed in between older posts". if you click the "View posts since last visit" you get all new posts - i.e. you have not read any of them, why does it matter in what order they appear?
The feature name is "View posts since last visit". it does not discuss in what ordering they should be. _________________ Will sell this place for beer |

Just poll it and present your positions there. Either that or I'll throw in an extra link for sorting method. Seems least painful. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |
