Interesting article in French:
http://fr.news.yahoo.com/afp/20070916/tts-france-iran-nucleaire-ue-sanctions-u-c1b2fc3_1.html

Basically, the head of French diplomacy, Bernard Kouchner, is taking a strong stance on Iran, asking the French to prepare for a possible war.

"We will not let Iran build the bomb, as this would put the entire world at risk."

Answering a question about a possible bombing of Iran, Kouchner replied that while other means to reach a solution to the crisis were explored, it was "normal to make such plans."

To my knowledge, this is one of the clearest signals sent to Iran, and it means that war is extremely likely.

I thought this was going to be a thread about how Bush is supposedly planning to bomb Iran.

Pablo? You out there? Care to weigh in on this story? Revenge most foul!

I have a long standing (1.5 years already) bet with my friend about how the Iranian Atomic Bomb issue is going to be resolved.
I think it won't, i.e. nothing will be done and Iran will achieve nuclear capability.
He thinks that someone would intervene.
I want to lose this bet but ever since the Iraq situation i don't believe the US will do anything. (Europe - and especially the French - will definitely do nothing other than talk)

I commend your measure. The 'definitely' part is particularly interesting.

Let's see.

I think that your generalities about, say, "the French", are annoying at best.

Given the circumstances, Nsof, it is not that bad that someone is trying to do something.

Leonidas, I'm pretty sure Nsof and myself are the two people who want an attack on Iran the most. I read his post to express hopelessness, not criticism on aggressive intentions of others.
Also, I'd take him up on his bet Felicitous

Leonidas,
What Bernard Kouchner said is an important step for making sure Iran will not achieve nuclear capability, and if words were enough then I'm sure the Europeans will have a very important role in making it so. I just dont see the French sending airplanes to bomb Iran.

Antrax, how about Humus?

Sure thing. If there's no attack on Iran by Jan. 1, 2009, I'll drive you to Ako and back myself Felicitous

Deal.
Let it not be said that nothing good came out of Bernard Kouchner's statement. Felicitous

Thanks RSA. Where Samadhi's obsession with cheese comes from, I hesitate to guess. However, I would like to point out that the two countries with the tougher stance on Iran right now are France and the Netherlands. So yeah, it's a cheesemaker thing.

Leonidas,
Do you think that the French and/or the Netherlands would attack Iran if it does not stop producing the atomic bomb?

Let me answer your question indirectly.

1) Do you see the US allowing Iran to develop the bomb? I certainly don't.

2) If the US tries to stop Iran, will they go alone? In my view, no way.

3) If they do try to stop Iran and do not go alone, then who will join?

So yes, I expect France to take part and send planes if it comes to... how did he put it? Oh yes: the worst.

The problem is i do. I cant see people like Pablo supporting a war against Iran. Add to that the war in Iraq and Bush will have a problem.

I hear you. I still don't believe that the world will be stupid enough. Let's see.

At any rate, notice that the US and most of its allies have deployed troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Then look at a map, and tell me what you think.

I personally would love to see france go to war.
You could probably get good odds for betting on how long before the first soldiers surrender

Hmmm...that's odd. When I googled 'french military victories' I got this. Admittedly, the first link there is to the one Poisonium posted. I assume everyone here has heard of Google-bombing?

I don't think much of practicing or perpetuating such things. It's dishonest, it's juvenile, it's meanspirited. How it could be considered humorous or relevent is beyond me.

Sorry, just had to say that.

Yes, I saw the url.

How do you suppose it got to be the first site listed in Google? Do you think all the people doing research on French military victories just naturally converged on that site?

Hmm, well I didn't know all that. And from deep inside my chest comes this loud, sincere scream of powerlessness upon discovering the truth:
Arrow OMGWS !!!! (I'm French).

False alarm, ladies and gentlemen. The French have decided to surrender again. Why don't you deal with Ahmadinejad with the help of others? We wish you good luck.

Help yourself to some more freedom fries, and I'll get one last glass of red wine before it's forbidden in my country.

Watch Halliburton stock. When it starts to level off, that's the time to anticipate war with Iran.

Not sure of your reference, but it's the financial interests in the US that are pushing this war. I figure the success they've had with this will serve as a pretty likely model for the future. Why tamper with success?

Well, what about other countries? Don't they have finances? Are you suggesting that they're staying out of the war out of the goodness of their hearts?

Other countries can't compare to our military / industrial complex. Waging a war for profit is something no one else is even close to being able to do on our level. Tell me who else has the means to combine the military might with the mercenary power to win wrangle the kind of contracts that are being assigned handed out in exchange for bribes. Halliburton can barely find competition in OUR country, let alone anywhere else. It's not about "goodness in their heart", it's about not being able to compete. Eisenhower saw this coming. Too bad we didn't listen when he warned us of exactly this.

Enjoy your denial.

Hmm. I think what you guys really need is a more pedagogical approach.

I therefore invite you to my "Trouble with being French" mafia. Beyond the joy of lynching each other, you will discover French history as never told before, and learn the ultimate "Trouble with being French".

I'll accept 20 players, and priority will be given to members who have taken part in this discussion.

So they are poor because they are just stupid (and because they spend money on funding Hizbullah and other nice organizations).

In any case this is not whats going to stop them from getting nukes.
