Hi all moderators,
I have been notified by our host that we're running over the server storage limits. Our allocation is 200MB, we're currently at about 300MB, of which 228MB is in the Discussion Forums.
I'm going to be in California for the next week, when I get back I'll be doing some pruning. Specifically, I'll be deleting all threads that have had no activity within the past X days (X to be determined on a Forum by Forum basis, ranging from 90 to 365).
If you have a suggestion as to what X should be for your Forums, please post it here, and I'll take it under advisement.
If there are old threads you want to preserve, simply make some modification to them to change their last post date. |

I just noticed this thread. I will try to bump and delete some today.
mith: some may already be gone from Kevin's auto-delet in early January. I will also be deleting some of the recent crap threads. |

From Sofis:
| Quote: |
| Part of the problem, I think, is that when you delete a topic, only the first page is actually deleted. One example is page 11 of The Biggest Thread Ever! in all it's half-megabyte glory. |
He had a link to OT thread. I seem to remember seeing others like this. When I've deleted a large thread, the forum count total decreases by the correct amount, but all pages after page one seem to remain. Can you do some kind of auto delete for thread pages for which no page 1 is present?
That quote is from OT discussion 'Stop the crap'. No one wants to see censure, but they recognize the spot you're (we're) in. |

| ok, here's an update on my progress... i just finished page 52, working backwards from the end. when i startd we were on page 58, and that is down to 54. i am deleting trivia types that arent as much puzzles as tests of knowledge, and any puzzles that are repeats, have no solution, stuff like that. also, my lovely helper is closing the chess and 3x3 threads, and will close some other types later... my thinking is that we can take these puzzle types and compile them all together... for example, bors could do something similar to what he has on his chess site, and have all the chess problems available(bors wouldn't have to do it, just an example of how it could be done), the 3x3 types could all be put together on one page with their answers, stuff like that. at the current rate, i think all of that would cut the remaining vsp puzzles down to about 1/3 of the number of threads there now. i don't know how this would affect the storage space tho. |

Status update:
I said I'd do the clean-up when I got back, but I've been overloaded. I'm heading out to New Orleans tomorrow, then to Florida, then to a wedding.
So the clean-up's been delayed by at least 8 days. Depending on the availability of internet access, I'll follow any message posts to this Forum.
Thanks all for your continuing efforts.

I'm back and ready to purge. Could the Forum Moderators please post what dates are okay to delete from? (Eg, I'm going to delete all threads in a Forum that are have had no posts since date X, tell me what X is for your Forum)
Incidentally, the discussion forums are now at 235MB. I think it would be much higher if not for the efforts of the moderators.

| could you hold of on vsp for a little bit longer? i'm out of school for a week, and i ought to be able to finish what i was doing... i was hoping to get rid of some of the stuff that doesnt need saving so that vsp doesnt need purging. also, we've been going thru closing certain types of puzzles, so that i can go back thru and sort them later and they can possibly be used for the open content thing. right now we are doing chess and 3x3 puzzles. |

in case it isnt clear exactly what i'm doing:
i'm going thru all the threads in vsp, starting from the oldest, and looking to see what it is. if it is a interesting/fun/difficult/etc. puzzle that needs to be saved, i leave it alone. if it is chess or 3x3 type, it is closed, so that later i can go thru and sort these somehow. i was thinking that we could group all these puzzles that are of the same type together for the ocp... a huge list of 3x3 puzzles? i just finished page 47... it takes me between about 20 or 30 minutes per page.
the problem with purging right now is that all of the oldest puzzles should be saved. and i know there are plenty on 1-46 that need to be saved too. is there any way you could create an archive for me that i could put things in to clear out vsp? would that even help? i was also wondering if i could temporarily have mod rights to one of the un-used forums, to put old puzzles in(if i can't get an archive). i could move all the chess puzzles there, then the 3x3s, then the morals, then the signmakers, etc. etc. and they would all be sorted then. |

i got quite a bit done yesterday, i'm up to page 37 now... main reason i am posting right now is to get my browser to put mithrandir instead of Shado-kei automatically |

2) Is it true that when you delete a thread on the GL, that only the 1st page is deleted? How do we free up this wasted room?
Yes, it is true. I just tried it by deleting 2 old threads using (a) the delete feature available to moderators, and (b) the [edit/delete] function one the first post of the thread. The total post count on the main page seemed to drop appropriately, but the second page was still accessible through editing the address line. I do not know how to free up this space.
This question was asked (and I answered it thusly) in OT. When this was brought up once before, mith suggested that the thread in question had gotten hosed somehow, causing page 1 to drop out of sight. I decided to test it when I saw the question posed.

Okay, here I am again. I had an internet outage that prevented me from doing anything for several days.
I just pruned the OT Forum for all threads with a last post older than 150 days, which knocked off about 5000 messages.
I've also created the requested "Archives" Forum as a holding pen for Threads you want to move out of a Forum so I can do an "older than" delete.
BTW, The Forums are now down to 215MB, showing some serious work by the Moderators.
