[voice=minister]Come worship with us, we have... a 40 foot statue of Jesus! We blatantly ignore the commandment of "Thou shalt not make any graven images"[/voice]
Seriously, though, this left me speechless when I saw it today, driving along I-75. I mean, what were they thinking?????????? |

Their website says he's 62 feet tall, and apparently the largest statue of Christ in America. 8000 hours to make. Incredible on one hand, on the other ... I guess it's true that the more you have, the more you can throw away on something frivilous and still think that it's a arge ministry in itself, rather than realize how much you didn't put into other more direct ministries on your home turf.
It's a statue. Does it inspire? Probably. Does it feed people, clothe and take care of them? No. The people inside should do that.
I'm not saying that every church should be bare-bones and cut right down to it's barest minimum to survive while it ministers, but it's hard to believe that some of these places are charitable organizations anymore. |

the statue itself is much more blasphemous. JC walks on water regardless of global warming. |

Which one? The cross I posted is for real - and of course, in Texas. _________________ My photography:

I'm gonna have nightmares about that thing. The eyes are just so...dead and empty. All it inspires me to do is hide under the covers and whimper. _________________ "I have an everyday religion that works for me: love yourself first, and everything else falls into line." --Lucille Ball |

| We're not supposed to make graven images, but the commandment says nothing about buying one. |

No matter what your faith, one can take solace in the joy expressed by this statue - it's as though he's saying "There's no need to be unhappy".
(actually he looks more as though he's stuck and screaming for help, but I couldn't resist.) |

Awesome!
I can get my lawn mowed if I pay some gentile to do it (even on Sunday)!
I can pay someone else to talk all the crap they want about my mom and dad.
I can pay someone to "eliminate" someone.
I can pay someone to "acquire" something someone else owns.
I can pay someone else to be my alibi.
I can pay someone else to force my neighbor to give me his house, or sell me his wife (as long as I didn't covet them).
Awesome. Awesome to the max.

| You can also pay someone else to put other gods before God, but I think that would be less satisfying. |

| I know of no mention in the bible of it being a sin for me to pay someone else to do the sinning for me. The person doing it would be sinning but there's a way out of that, too. The "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" quote has been perverted to mean that it's all right to kill in time of war if your government orders it. That can apply to other commandments as well. If the person I hire recognizes me as his government or as representing his government he can do anything I tell him to do without fear for his soul. |

That's the most ridiculous commandment anyway. Here's my most recent email to Jehovah.
"No other gods? Look, I've always enjoyed drinking mead with Thor in Valhalla and you knew that before we started our relationship. I understand you're jealous of the time I spend with him. But he's my drinking buddy. You are my hope of ever lasting salvation. Nothing could mean more to me than you. And all those rumors about Aphrodite are lies. It's only you, only you." _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |
