In an effort to promote use of this forum and to highlight my plight I regret to inform you that I was made redundant from my job today (after 3 months paid leave). I have always worked for investment banks in London and quite frankly it sucks and I want to do something different.
I have a wife two lovely young girls and 6 months money in my pocket.

Anyone got any ideas what I should do ??

PS Charitable donations to other GL members are out of the question

I'm sorry to hear that you were 'made redundant.' Is that your term or theirs? Based on your message, I'm not sure if I should be truly sorry, but it must be stressful knowing that you have six months funding.

I was given the boot a couple of years ago with a wife and two kids. When I began looking, somehow I was able to scare up 'consulting work'. This amounted to contractual assignments at firms where I interviewed, and we were able to (a) feel each other out and (b) extend the timeframe for finding the next opportunity. Also, the money for short-term assignments was pretty good (no benefits, though).

I don't really have any constructive advice for what direction you should chose. The only thing I can offer is something you may have already covered if you've been on paid leave for 3 months - ROAD TRIP!

I have always said that when I make my million, I am going to live off the interest and go back to school to become a teacher. For me it is not the warm fuzzy 'make a difference' that has atracted me, but the challenge and strategy that is involved. How do you get kids or young adults to listen to what you have to say, and actually learn from it? I am looking forward to teaching my two year old. I may try home schooling if I can swing it at work. I figure give me two hours a day and I can match the performance of public schools (Here in the US)

I agree Suess, if it wasn't the money issue, I would have gone into teaching myself.. obviously not spelling though.

But I would have done it, because I know how much most of the teachers suck, and how GREAT it is when you get a good one. I don't know if I would have made a 'good' teacher, but I sure as hell would have tried.
