Ok, so:
Assuming my foot race order is right:
Cronos Wins= points dont matter
Zeus second= 31 points
? third
? fourth
Coelus, or Me and Hades are fifth (assuming Poseidon having 7 points more than me also has more than 24 points)
Same for Sixth
Hermes Seventh= (less than me and hades)
Aphrodite Last= 0
Unknown placement:
Coelus= 24 points
Ares= 2(me or hades)
Poseidon= (me or hades) + 7
Thats all i can get. anyone get further? |

Don't you just love it when newbies whack in their ideas when they patently can't be arsed to read the whole thread?
In the vain attempt to stem further suchlike gems can I suggest that the intended answer is Ares aka Mars is the fourth speediest planet around the solar system, and that the basketball score equates to the number of known satellites as of Dec 31st 2000. This admittedly raises a query about the suggested score of Zeus which web-sites I've consulted suggest a score of 27 rather than 28, but what's one moon between cosmopolitan friends? |

Hey newbies, next time one of you gets an answer to puzzle, check it against ralphmerridew's answer in the 3rd post in this thread. If your answer isn't the same as his, then it's wrong and there's no point posting it.

| Hey, now, in the competition itself Logain would consider "wrong" answers for partial credit if you could justify your reasoning. The only thing these solvers could be doing differently is justifying their responses by telling us how they worked it out. Not having the same answer as someone else doesn't make them flat-out wrong. |

K, this is what I've got so far:
Race
1 Hermes
2 Myself
3 Cronos
4 Poseidon
5 Aphrodite (5th or 6th)
6 Ares (5th or 6th)
7 Zeus
8 Coelus
9 Hades
Basketball
1 Chronos lead
2 Zeus 31 (24 plus 7); 7 more than Coelus
3 Poseidon 7 more than myself
4 Ares double my score
5 Myself/Hades 7 less than Poseidon
6 Myself/Hades 7 less than Poseidon
7 Hermes
8 Coelus 24 (3 times 8); 7 less than Zeus
9 Aphrodite. 0 |

According to ralphmerridew, Ares placed 4th and scored 2 baskets (I assume 2 points per basket in a regular game of basketball, without 3-ponters)
With that said, the order of finish and points scored would be:
1. Cronos (the most, given)
2. Zeus (2nd place was given, 7 + Coelus)
3. Poseidon (9, 7 + Logain)
4. Ares (4 points)
5. Coelus
6. Hades (2, half Ares)
7. Logain (2, half Ares)
8. Hermes
9. Aphrodite (zero, given)
The gaps is where we have problems.
Hermes MUST be one point from the info given.
Coelus' score must be a multiple of 3. However, in order to place where he is he must have scored 3 points, equating to a 1st place in the footrace, which goes against Hermes winning the footrace.
What am I missing here?
Is this not supposed to be a logic problem per se, but an astronomy problem in disguise? |

A free throw is only worth one point.
Your last 4 words are correct, albeit late, as it has been mentioned several times in the thread already. |

Question:
When someone is referred to as "lost to" in the race, does that mean they were right behind that person, or that that person was ahead of them, with no specific distance given?
Example:
Zeus lost to Aphrodite.
Does that mean Zeus was in the place right behind Aphrodite, or that Aphrodite was simply ahead of Zeus? _________________ Now listen

This is crap. Look at these possibilites:
Let's assume Coelus has 6 points.
This makes Coelus second place in the footrace. So Hermes, Coelus, then everyone else.
In B-Ball, these all work:
1. Cronos won, Zeus second (13), Poseidon(9), Coelus(6),Ares(4) Me/Hades(2), Hermes(1), Aphrodite(0)
2. Cronos won, Zeus second (13), Poseidon(10), Coelus(6), Ares(6) Me/Hades(3), Hermes(1-2), Aphrodite(0). Can assume that this is not possible due to tie although it is not clear that there are no ties if not listed explicitly.
3. Cronos won, Zeus second (13), Poseidon(11), Ares(8), Coelus(6), Me/Hades(4),Hermes(1-3),Aphrodite(0)
4. Cronos won, Zeus second (13), Poseidon(12), Ares(10), Coelus(6), Me/Hades(5),Hermes(1-4),Aphrodite(0)
And there are others...
What vital clue am I possibly missing? |

| Forgetting about the metapuzzle, anybody want to take a stab at how many valid answers to the question as stated is, assuming only 9 participants. Any value for Ares' basketball score and position is acceptable if it doesn't contradict the narrative. |

"Forgetting about the metapuzzle" the valid answers are 84 -That is a good reason to look for a non mathematical approach, like the astronomical one in the given answer- .
Ares can be wherever you want from 3rd to 8th in the race. At the basket points, what we know is that is an even number equal or bigger than 2 -supposing Hermes made no points, than i made at least 1-. As for the upper limit, it has to be less than the Zeus score, which can be up to 31 -Coelus can be not lower than 8th in the race because of Hades-. That makes an upper limit of 30 points for Ares.
So you have 6 different race positions and 15 different basketball scores. 90 possibilities...
Then you have two restrictions : when Ares is 8th Coelus can't be lower than 6th -Zeus being the 9th and Hades being lower seeded than Coelus-, and when Ares is 7th, again, Coelus can not be lower than 6th -Zeus and Hades take the last two places-. So in those two Ares race place, Coelus can't make more than 18 points at basketball, making the Zeus limit 25 points. So Ares can not make more than 24 points -Zeus finished 2nd-. You have to rule out the Ares 26, 28 and 30 points performance when in 7th or 8th position. Those 6 combinations are not possible. So you got your number, 84.
So, you all witness that the result of the answer within and after the answer, is 42 and 42. |
