I'm not annoying, I'm....inquisitive.

We need a newbie forum. Regulars could contribute to informational threads, then they would be locked. Then there would be other threads for posing questions, which would be deleted periodically, after and relevant information was moved to a locked thread relating to it (mods can lock threads, I assume they can unlock them )

It would include topics such as mafia rules, known mafia roles, inside jokes, and any information regulars want to add about themselves or the GL in general.

Or something.

The only problems are server space, and who on earth would want to mod it?

(actually I would )

Maybe this would be better is it was jst a site someone put up. If someone wants to put a GL Newbie webstie, that would be great, I can't personally.

But if there is space I think a Newbie Forum would be worthwhile.

HandsomeDan, I was just thinking about that. Sort of like a FAQ for newbie. It could also include instructions on UUB tags, rules & conducts, what BUMB and ISE (and other acro) mean, etc.

A sort of newbie training ground if you like.

I am sure most of these stuff can be figure out eventually, but it's nice to have a central place to look for help and not have newbies (me) keep asking the same basic question again and again.

We were thinking about an introduction to the different forums a while ago. It would be locked and then Minty could change the date to some where in the future so it would always be on top.

Hey yeah, that's a great idea.

I wouldn't mind having someone explain the rules to Mafia for me. I sort of know what's going on but is uncertain on what goes on behind the scene.

oh and what's does THP stand for? and what's a chestnut?

and definitely info on some of the regulars here would be pretty cool.

VQLY< I can answer two questions for you, but they are indeed the sort of things that belong in a GL faq.
THP stands for Treasure Hunt Puzzle,
and a chestnut is a puzzle that has been posted over and over in slightly different shapes, e.g. "connect water, gas and electricity to three houses without crossing the cables"

A segment of my VG FAQ that is waiting for minty to get back from his endless vacations. (Mods should get to go on some of those, IMHO)

Mafia
The most popular game in the forum (at least for now), it involves a town overrun with mafia scum. The basic roles include townies, who do nothing but vote, mafia who kill others during the night, cops who can check to see if someone is mafia, and doctors who can protect one person every night. Other roles are added by the moderators.
Game Etiquette:

  1. No talking about roles outside the thread, unless you are mafia discussing who should die.
  2. No posting private E-mails or any chat conversations.
  3. No revealing information if you are dead.
  4. Generally, masons (groups of townies who know each other) shouldn't spill the guts on their whole house without their permission.

To start a mafia game:
There is a waiting list, please try to follow it.

vqly, you're correct that a THP, or Treasure Hunt Puzzle is a multi-level puzzle.

While there is no set format, each THP starts off with some sort of puzzle that may go through more than one stage to come up with the final answer(s).

Usually a THP includes a background story that is not part of the puzzle, but rather used for amusement and possible hints on how to proceed.

The one I currently have posted starts off with 24 clues, and after several stages which only become apparent after solving the first stage will eventually lead to a one word answer.

You can try to look at some old THP's, but they are hard to follow. But here are two...one of mine and one from Bowlman in which the last post has the entire solution so you can get a feel for how they worked. Hope that helps you.

Logain's THP#1
Bowlman's THP#2

Thanks all.

Let me know when your mideval mafia game is up Courk. I want to give it a try.

Logain, I tried to work thru your current THP (#5?) but it's hurting my head. I guess I will just lurk and watch how people work thru it.

I would like to request that the "Thank you for deleting this post!" message be changed to something more ironic, if in fact that is possible.

Umn, personally I think an FAQ or thread on etiquette would be useful (a more serious one than that in Off Topic ^_^ ) It’s nice to know if you’re going to be stepping on peoples toes or something.
Also, I have a suspicion that people here like to make newbies figure out how things go… sort of to get in the spirit of things…?!

No, not really. It's just that we're the most mind-numbingly cynical people on the face of the earth. Or was the cynically mind-numbing? Perhaps both.
