The last tournament is over, so it's time to start the next. The regular sorts of rules will apply. Voting periods will be one week plus my earliest convenience.
Please post or send me a GL message with a list of up to 20 humans whom you consider to be "the greatest". The deadline for these submissions is August 8th. Assuming there are enough submissions, we'll use the top 64 (with run-offs, if necessary).
In order to ensure that our lists are independent, please try to compose your list before you look at the lists of others. This will prevent the "oh yeah, that's a good idea, I'll add him/her" sort of reaction that could skew the nomination process.
Lastly, I encourage you to do some research about the people mentioned. This is a great opportunity to learn about some truly great humans.

Hitler wont get a single vote from me cause this is "greatest human" not "most influential" he was very important to history but murdering hundreds of thousands of people does not make you great. _________________ The Classic Blunders:

But surely they both go together when making a decision?
Sir Steve Redgrave is a great human, but I personally wouldn't vote for him as his greatness is limited to a specific event. I would vote more for a rounded person who is both great and influential than someone who is great in a limited field.
Hitler wasn't limited, he can be placed within politics, mitillary, literature, art, and leadership. It just depends how ones views on his 'greatness' is viewed. |

Well, I have to say that Hitler almost made my list too, but in the end he was pushed out by Napoleon. It was a tough call though. (And I had totally forgotten Alexander. He might even have beaten out Napoleon...)
I have to say that I am now looking forward to this poll immensely, especially after seeing the initial lists. Trying to judge between a sitcom and a drama is one thing, but at least they have some reference points in common. This one is going to be mad... _________________

Greatest Human Beings:
Bolded = People who I definitely feel should be there.
1. Mother Theresa
2. Stephen Hawking
3. Bill Gates
4. Thomas Edison
5. Dr Phil (lol)
6. Steve Irwin (The Crocodile Hunter)
7. Abraham Lincoln
8. Angelina Jolie
9. Nelson Mandella
10.Martin Luther King
11.William Shakespeare
12. C.S Lewis
13. Winston Churchill
14. Walt Disney
15. William The Conquerer
16. O.J Simpson
17. Noah
18. Christopher Columbus
19. Billy Graham
20. Gutenberg
I am voting against Jesus and Mohammed. A Jesus vs Mohammed match up would be immoral.

Oh I totally agree Hitler did do some great things for Germany but I feel his when put on a sacle I feel the bad he did outweighs the good. But I definately see where your coming from and am actually not surprised to see him nominated I just cant see him beating out any of these names after the Holocaust. _________________ The Classic Blunders:

Jesse Owens

Albert Einstein
Edmund Hillary
Douglas Bader
Elizabeth I

Nelson Mandela
Leonardo da Vinci
Charles Darwin

Winston Churchill
Hippocrates
Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha)
Capt. James Cook
Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Ludwig van Beethoven
Alexander the Great
F.D. Roosevelt
Joseph Stalin (one for the controversialists since I didn't put Hitler!)
I'm leaving off the "mainstream" religious figures because I didn't want to have to field a major chunk of my list with them, and there's probably enough nominations anyway for me not to worry about them. Still I felt it was worth putting the Buddha in my list. |

Obviously "greatest" is pretty subjective. I guess in my mind it's largely tied to historical impact, which is why I suggested Hitler.
Plus dethwing already nominated him, so I figured it was safe.
I don't really expect him to win though, because even by my criteria there are certainly others that have been more influential. |

I voted for "influencing history" only because it was the closest to what I thought the primary criterion should be: "Had the greatest positive impact on the largest number of people."
My nominations
Jesus
Lao Tzu (why have you all missed him?!?)
Gandhi
Henry David Thoreau
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther
Thomas Becket
William Shakespeare
John Adams
George Washington
Abe Lincoln
George W. Bush.
(Just kidding on that last one.) |

I nominate Noah.
1. For his engineering genius.
2. For his workmanship.
3. Without his effort, history would have been WAY different. For one think, Jesus's birth would have been the result of a really immaculate conception - no father AND no mother. Not to mention no donkey and no wise men. |
