Two old pioneers.

Ludwig van Beethoven (16 December 1770 – 26 March 1827) was a German composer and pianist.

Galileo Galilei (15 February 1564 – 8 January 1642) was a Tuscan (Italian) physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the scientific revolution.

Beethoven was a great composer and contributed to culture in an enduring way. As well as this, he overcame many a difficult family life, and famously deafness. A personally great man. Musical culture has not affected the world as significantly as the legacy of Galileo, however. Galileo was certainly a genius and is credited as "the father of modern science" with major contributions to physics and technology. He endured the Inquisition, and while he did not publicly "hold fast" to his beliefs (and thereby submit himself to pain of death) he wisely recanted "enough" to allow him to continue develop his works, providing a platform for major scientific advance. The legacy, and variety and depth of his personal talents are the greater.

...but at least Beethoven didn't invade Poland.

It's a tough call this one. In the end, I can live without the telescope, but I can't live without the Fifth Symphony. Or is that other way around?
