In the Memory mafia thread I have been repeatedly insulted by Wall-E.

Evidently, I am not talking about things like "You are a lying mafia member."

I am talking about stuff like

I, personally, do not find behavior like that acceptable.

While there isn't an actual document dictating how to behave in a mafia game, common sense is typically used. There aren't signs that say "No cussing in the children's section" at the library, but most people follow social norms naturally.

Insults like the one you describe would make the game less fun. Unfortunately, there's nothing most of us can really do. However, looking at the rules of that game:

The problem is that ad hominem can be useful for hunting scum. So can appeal to emotion, lying, strawmans... with a game where argument and social interaction both play a role, it's hard to draw a line between one type of play and another. What you see as insulting and pointless may just be a player judging your responses. In this case, I can't comment, as the game is ongoing, but suffice to say I apologize if I offended you.

In a RL mafia game it might also be useful to beat up people to hunt out scum, so what?

And I don't see why you wouldn't see someone's origin as insult if you see being fat as an insult. And yes, people have a harder time getting jobs if they are fat.

I've done similar things in the past. I think it's a legitimate tactic. You should not carry over anything from a mafia game to "real life" (or forum life, as the case may be).

The following is my thinly veiled rant posing as a comment on this subject.Beware, and most importantly i will not respond to criticisms on this one!

It is a just a god damn game. feelings will be hurt. people will beouted. Mafia isnt a game of tag. I see what he wrote and honestly, its nothing. put the big boy pants on.

That being said, there is a line that you can cross in terms of tasteless and classless remarks, personally I try to stay a racial slurs and religious shit out of mafia games,

So hey (generic racist remark) go back to your (generic religious slur about a place to worship) and uhhh play more mafia.

.This type of behavior is generally considered bad sportsmanship towards other players, when you insult esme, I find it disrespectful towards your fellow player, and I think she does too.
.While it is a violation of the rule and unwarranted behavior (considering players before have used agressive behavior as a scumhunting tactic and haven't had to as go as far as making a notorious defaming on one's character or image) at this point in the game it would be quite sad to lose an active player.
.However, I respect both of you as users, and feel that this cannot go completely un noticed, I am willing to put away the slaying sword if you two can make a truce, and if you Wall-E sincerely apologize to esme. (Or if you have already done so, send me a link.)
.If both of you can agree on this and try to settle things down, then I believe that the game can go forward.
.But Wall-E, consider this a warning, if you get into a situation like this again and go further in a rude manner you will be unquestionably modkilled. I'd rather have a clean game than a bountiful one.

Can you two agree to this?

For what it's worth, I am satisfied with your warning without further action.

I would certainly appreciate an apology that goes beyond "Sorry if I offended you, but I will continue because it is just a game so it is fine to try to hurt other people's feeling to win.", but I don't exactly expect it and I am dead in the game for the moment anyway.

posting in a dead thread because I'm bored at uni and want to avoid doing work so I can panic when the deadline looms even nearer.

Personally I've thrown out considerably more offensive statements when playing the game (key word there, game) but never have I carried it outside the game (see there again, game) the nature of games is to be a place to suspend the hassle of real life and relax/ forget about it all/ go crazy doggie!!!
Granted most of the games I play these days are alted and whilst technically one doesnt know who the other players are, you generally can pick out enough traits to narrow it down, and act accordingly. Whilst never pulling the racial slurs card, I make (normally) several comments that could be considered personal insults either in a rabid hunt for the scum or in a defence to discredit my assailant. It is (imo) a legitimate tactic and so long as it stays in the thread its fine, soak it up, and play hardball back. Obviously there is a line, and a bit of common sense will tell that lies considerably further out than where WALL-E was pitching.

But I agree with you, up to the point where the other person gets offended. At that point, a line has been crossed, and an apology is necessary. It's supposed to be a game, so when a player stops having fun I feel bad.
