Remember 'I' am a modern, physical object - it's just my 'brothers' who are not. Also 'I' am unique in my neighbourhood.
Further hint: Although I resemble both my 'brothers' equally, I am actually closer to the Roman one in value

Post-migraine thought: Are you a COMPACT DISC (CD)? The two brothers being DC (Roman numerals for 600) and DC (direct current).

I'm glad you're over your migraine, carrier_of_the_arch, but your guess, while inventive, is not correct.

Since we're on a new page I'll repost the riddle:

47.
I' m unique! (Well, among those with whom I operate)
Sadly, I used to be more valuable a few thousand years ago.
But even now I'm highly valued.
In fact on special occasions I'm worthy of my brother in yet a third assembly!

What am I?

I'm not going to give any further clues just yet, I'll just wait for serendipity to strike. You might be doing anything, maybe just playing some game or other, when inspiration hits you, and you go
'That's it! I know the answer to Oscar's riddle!'

bgg, you're really showing your age (or lack thereof). I would think that chess/checkers/backgammon would be even more than one third, so I imagine we're talking about Monopoly, Clue, Yachtzee, something like that. Nothing from any of those seems to fit the riddle, though.

I'm guessing X.
It's worth 8 in scrabble (only one X in set), but 10 as a Roman numeral.
I'm assuming the third assembly relates to XY chromosomes.

Two thirds correct, Jack_Ian! Felicitous

For the third assembly it's a very well-known one. Why might a Scrabble X be worthy of this member on 'special occasions'?

Well, in Bowling an "X" represents a Strike, worth 10 points/pins + the number of points/pins from the next 2 balls?

Three strikes in a row, XXX, is a Turkey.

Or in Baseball, an "X" represents a strike as well.
EDIT - Actually in baseball it's a "K" not an "X"

Do any of these move the answer along?

Nice ideas, Icarus, but the third assembly is nothing to do with a game, it's a collection used by all of us constantly, every day

That's it! The long saga is finally ended. Felicitous

I'm an 'X' scrabble tile worth 8 points normally, as opposed to the 10 of my Roman numeral 'brother', but on 'special occasions' (when I'm played on a triple letter square) I'm worth 24, which is where my other 'brother' is in the alphabet.

#48. A pretty easy one that I just made up.

I'm not very big; I could fit in your hand.
But I have wrought changes throughout the land.

I am a weapon, or an agent of peace.
I can have power that does not cease.

I'm not what's prized; instead you'll find
The prize is the tracks I leave behind.

Er...but it's the Y chromosone that makes it male, Zag, and the maths don't stack up.

Well, right. So the speaker (the X) is the sister, and she's referring to her brother, Y.

When I cam up with the chromosome solution, I thought it was weak. It didn't fit as snugly as I'd hoped. If I had seen the connection for the letter I would have been pretty certain of my answer.

As for #48, I'm pretty sure it's not a syringe filled with opiates, but it could be. Felicitous

If I remember correctly, it's not the Y-chromosome that makes one male, but the absense of a second X-chromosome.

Hmmm. We may have to move this to the Science forum soon. Extreme Delectation

But I think you're wrong, since people with Klinefelter's syndrome (a.k.a. XXY syndrome) are male.

The Y chromosome is there to fix the mistakes in the X chromosome. *nudge*
It intercedes at key moments to alter standard development leaving the X chromosome to do most of the work. That's why males still have nipples etc. They were not fixed in the current patch. Not really sure when the next patch comes on-stream, as there are numerous reports of its imminent release, but then that's been the case for millennia already.
