Shhhh. I am definitely benefiting from the effect, since nearly the only change I made was a fairly small amount of strength training. If the benefit is really just because of placebo effect, I don't want to know.

"Immediacy"

As in - the positive reinforcement of dieting (losing weight, lower chance of heart disease, etc.) is less effective as a consequence because it has a lower immediacy of the negative punishments (being deprived of foods you like).

To repeat the argument for exercise, replace negative punishment with positive punishment (fatigue, sore muscles, etc.),

I agree that immediacy (as you define it) is a significant contributing factor to that. Procrastination also plays a part, though that might describe a symptom rather than a cause. But from personal experience, when it comes to making a change in life (diet, exercise, whatever), I often feel the need to be "mentally ready" to do it. "I'm not making the change today, but I'm getting ready", I'll think ... "Soon". At times there may be circumstantial reasons why being ready is a bit of a way off. "Too much shit going on in my life right now", which goes back to what Thok said. There's some truth in it (the "I'm getting ready" notion), and there's also some plain old the-mind-playing-tricks-with-itself, and procrastinating.

I started eating better as soon as possible because I love (real/fresh/good) food, but what you just described was my exact attitude about quitting smoking.

Being mentally prepared *did* help, but there were dozens of times I put it off prior to actually setting a strict date in my mind. "Once work is less stressful", "we're not having kids yet so there's no need for urgency", or even "there's a party in a couple of weeks and I'm going to want to smoke while I drink, so I'd better hold off", etc. Being poor helped me make the healthy choice in this case, though. Felicitous
