I was thinking about what poll tournament we could do since its been several months since greatest human. So if anyone is interested feel free to suggest a topic. I am willing to run it unless someone else wants to.

I suggest greatest villian. maybe Darth Vadar vs. Hannibal Lecter

I've just started Song and Book tournaments over on mafiascum... we've also done Movie and Fictional Character. There were quite a few suggested topics this time which haven't been run over here... among the finalists:

Band/Solo Artist
Food/Dish
Internet Video (non-music)

I'd be happy to run one here if there's interest. There hasn't really be huge turnout in the past couple, though.

^agreed^

If mith would agree to run it thats fine with me. How can I argue with a prestigious guy like Mith. But yeah we should definately see if there is even any interest.

Internet Video would be fun.

Greatest nation in the world would be stupid, because most would just vote for their own, not knowing any better. It'll basically be a "where are you from?" poll.

I'd like a "favorite video game" or "favorite music album".

Food drink would be pretty good too, though.

I love that name, because it's neither a republic nor democratic.

What about mythical creature? It doesn't have to be strongest either, as unicorns have their magic and shphinx has its riddles, etc. Though the definition of "creature" may need narrowing (is minotaur sentient? Are centaurs counted? Then why not hobbits or dwarves? Maybe fictional race?)

Oh crizzap, I can't believe we didn't think of this: Best Puzzle!

We can include both unique puzzles (Three Hats, 9 Minute Egg) and puzzle formats (Crossword, Kakuro).

This is a great idea! Though I wouldn't want to mix the two. How about best chestnut puzzle, and limit it to the ones in the Chestnut Puzzles thread, but with the caveat that people can add to that thread if they want another one to be considered.

Then another competition on best puzzle format.

How about best portrayal of Satan by an actor in a movie? There should be enough of those and maybe some clips could be found on YouTube. If not Satan then maybe some other mythical or historical personality.

problem with funniest comic strips wouldn't be much fun without including webcomics, and then xkcd would be the default winner anyway Wink

In the nomination process of drinks, I realized that individuals tend to only really like about 5 different drinks. A rum and coke person doesn't even want to try a tequila sunrise. And the variations people do enjoy make it even harder. Tea, coffee, beer, and wine encompasses a wide range of drinks that have very different flavors.

What might be interesting is movies from 2005 to 2010. I am not sure if there were enough good movies in that time frame.

Or best non-US movie. But that is mostly because of my current obsession of quality foreign films.

Or go with "English isn't the spoken language"

City of God (Cidade de Dues) [Portuguese- Brazil]
Spirited Away[Japanese]
Oldboy [Korean]
Bashu, the Little Stranger [Iranian dialect]
Love's a Bitch (Amores Perros) [Spanish- Mexico]
Seven Samurai [Japanese]
The Lives of Others [German]
Miqad Alley (El Callejon De Los Milagros) [Spanish- Mexico]
Letters From Iwo Jima [Japanese]
Amelie [French]

It appears I recommend 10/21 of the non-English films I have downloaded.

We'd tell people they would have had to recently try the drink(s) within the last 6 months to vote. That would encourage people to go outside the box a little.

Yes, I enjoyed Seven Samurai quite a bit. It was a slow movie but I liked how that played into the character development. It also added a realistic element. I don't like when war movies change frames every 5 seconds to show another explosion or person dying. Seven Samurai showed the tedious and rather boring side to conflicts. I can understand someone not liking it because it was a three hour movie that could be made into a 15 minute film.
