I was wondering if there are any Scientologists on the GL that can explain the basic principles of the religion in plain English, without the jargon. All articles about Scientology are either overloaded with esoteric terminology or are incredibly mocking. I'm interested in an earnest response about the core of the religion, so keep the obligatory taunts about Xenu to a minimum.

A while back, I found the wikipedia article on Scientology to be quite balanced and informative.

As far as I can tell, the entry-level stuff has to do with bad spirits in your body and that sort of thing. Anything more advanced that that involves the esoteric jargon. This is a religion that was founded by a science fiction author (and not an especially insightful one, at that).

Scientology. I can explain it easily.

It's bullshit.

Why is Scientology getting mocked so heavily?

I don't find it any more unbelieveable than any other religion. Sure, the stories in it may be worse than other religions (especially the Norse mythology is great at this), but it's not a less serious one.

Edit: I also just found out I bumped a thread from may.Yay!

Poisonium, it's getting mocked so heavily because they have a very bad habit of not allowing anyone to disagree in public with them. Ex-members are harassed, threatened and more.
They act as a cult, applying pressure on people to remain faithful and act for the church.
members are encouraged to break contact when their families, especially so when that family is disapproving of Scientology.

And that is only what *I* know, not involved in it. I'm sure there's lots more.

Don't forget that members are strongly pressured to buy a bunch of "Lessons" and the like. They are quite the profit center for the organization.
