Really? When and where? radiotimes.com didn't give any results, and http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lpk02 only mentions series 2, with nothing on iplayer. rsvp. |
That seems odd, since
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lskhg
gives me a link to series 3 (and apparently all the episodes too.) _________________

speaking of only connect: http://www.bbc.co.uk/onlyconnect/quiz/ there's an online game now! huzzah
edit: just tried them all out. Most I got zero, about 3 ones, 2 twos, a four (then suddenly realized that you're still on the clock to name the connections), and number 15 gave me my only 10! |

Thanks. Good fun, but it's a little different from the tv version.
On the programme, you do the category choosing AFTER the timer has run out, and the groupings are revealed...
Playing on this basis, I got (wall: groups/category names)
1: 0 / 3
2: 4 / 3
3: 0 / 3
4: 4 / 4
5: 1 / 2
Tough going! Especially when you know the category, but can't figure which 4 they're looking for! I'll try the rest later... |

6 - 1 / 2; 7 - 0 / 2; 8 - 1 / 3; 9 - 1 / 2 ;10 - 0 / 1
11 - 4 / 3; 12 - 4 / 4; 13 - 2 / 2; 14 - 4 / 3; 15- 4 / 3
Last set of 5 were my best set. Good fun. |

I got a perfect score on about half of them first time out, but then again this is easily my favourite section of the show and I've started to learn the tricks (or, perhaps, since they are boards from the show, I've just got a good memory?! Although I didn't consciously recognise any of them.)
The worst case is when you hit the third set but have no idea what the last set is. At least with this version you get the rest of the time to try and figure it out - on the show they rarely get that luxury. _________________

The answer is Tommy.
Spoilers:
Good news is that the answer is unambiguous. More ambiguous than I thought it would be until I got to the "KID" category.
The puzzle could have benefited from being more "tight" though. A stronger puzzle would have involved words that follow the pattern KID ______, BLIND ________, etc. Instead, you mix words that come before, words that come after, words that are associated with the answers but don't actually form a phrase (like Beethoven), phrases missing words (dumb as a doorpost), homophones (def leppard), and synonyms (tease). It might make the puzzle harder to solve, but in an artificial way. I much prefer an easy but well designed puzzle to a difficult but haphazardly designed one. Does that make sense?
Also, I'm pretty sure you meant "waiter," not "water".
Anyway, I still had fun solving it, so thanks. |

Naaah! This isn't a 3x3 (or a 3x3x3) where those are the expected rules. These puzzles are not expected to have as tight a tie to the words, that's why you get four and not just three.
That said, even your hint didn't help. I only see two choices that I can two choices that clearly go with kid. There are two others that I can stretch to fit, so I assume those are correct, but I had thought of that word before and discarded it. I guess that's my problem with these puzzles, I discard choices too easily if I only find two matches. (On the other hand, I've considered at least 10 different words with two matches -- they can't all be correct.) |

I only half agree with you.
Spoilers: I realize that a four by four doesn't have to be a fill in the blank like 3x3x3s are, but I believe that each set of four should be internally consistent. Take a look at lexprod's preceding 4x4. Some of this categories are groups of things, like Newspaper Comics Dogs. Some are fill in the blanks, like the _____ Movie series. Now imagine if the answers to movie were not "disaster", "epic", "scary", and "date", but instead were "disaster", "house" (as in movie house), "screen" (as in something you see a movie on) and "Amadeus" (a particular movie). Clearly, I'm exaggerating with my choices, but can you see how "Things that all have to do with movies somehow" is just a weaker category in general?
My suggestion that he stick to the fill-in-the-blanks clues was NOT based on the fact that it's the rules of the game that he do so, because it isn't. It was just one suggestion to make the categories tighter as a whole...though it would have made the categories all alike, which has its own weakness in a 4x4 (lexprod's, for example, has a nice mix of different category types, but again, they're all internally consistent.
Does that make sense, or am I just rambling?
And here are the answers, as I see them:
DEAF = deaf MUTE, def LEPPARD, stone DEAF, beethoven (deaf person)
DUMB = dumb BELL, dumb DOWN, dumb as a DOORPOST, dumb WA(I)TER
BLIND = blind ALLEY, blind FAITH, blind SIDE, COLOUR blind
KID = kid FRIENDLY, kid GLOVES, kidNAP, TEASE (synonym)
And that DEAF, DUMB, and BLIND KID, he sure played a mean pinball. |

I see your point. Yeah, I agree that for individual groupings, it would be good if they are internally consistent.
Dumb as a doorpost? I've heard the expressions
Dead as a doornail.
Dumb as a doorknob.
Deaf as a post (and even doorpost, though less common).
I do like the final answer, though, once you get the intermediate ones. The puzzle has a very satisfying ending. |

Set #1 is a cheat but very funny. Sets #3 and #4 seem fairly straightforward, but I have no idea about #2 yet. _________________

#3 is obvious, but it's got red herrings which makes finding out just which four the tricky part.
