I've been thinking of ways to make this a bit more interesting, but I don't know if it seems right, so here are the two options:

Option 1: single entry game - everyone guesses a number, and I multiple it by 2 and divide it by 3. Whoever is closest to that number wins.

Option 2: points - basically multiple games of this, except that the number I create is the amount of points the winner wins. The first player to a certain number of points is the overall winner.

If anyone wants to comment, or even play either of these games I'd be fine to run them.

Would there be limits on the ranges? No negatives, no numbers over 10,000,000 etc. Otherwise I could submit (googleplex^googleplex)^googleplex - resulting in me being the most likely winner because I'd be the closest to the average on account I shoved it up so much... But then maybe everyone would submit stupid numbers like that too.

Be aware if you dont put limits, your math skills may be pushed to an incredible limit.

No you wouldn't. The outlier is never closest.

Consider three guesses, 1 and 1 and 97. The average is 33. 2/3 the average is 22. The 97 loses.

Yeah there would have to be a range like 1 to 100 or 1000 and whole numbers not any decimals

They did something like this over at mafiascum. Here were the rules, in case you are curious:

1. They did half the average, instead of 2/3 of the average.
2. Bids had to range from 0 to 100.
3. The game lasted multiple rounds. Everyone started with 100 points; each time you bid, you would lose 1 point for every point you were over half the average. For example: if your bid was 34, and "half the average" was 15, then you'd lose 19 points. Lose all your points, and you're out of the game.
4. On the other hand, if you were UNDER half the average at any point during the game, you'd immediately be eliminated. If "half the average" is 15, say, and you bid 14, you'd be out, regardless of how many points you had.
5. There were deadlines each round. Anyone not submitting by the deadline would be treated as submitting a bid of 100.

Rule #4 was crucial, IMO. Otherwise, game theory suggests that everyone should bid 0 every time. Rule #4 gave people a chance to win by making large bids.

did you just drop game theory in this thread? OH THE FLAME WAR IS ON NOW!!!

FLAMEEEE WAARRR HEY EVERYONE THERES A FLAME WAR GOING ON!!!

seriously, it seems to me that you are right about game theory suggesting that it would eventually go to zero, but assuming that it is only one round, I dont think game theory would come into play as much (WIFOM or prisoner's dilemma if anything)

using the scum rules that TH posted, I think it brings a unique aspect of the game, and would have loved to have been apart of it
