jesternl: you only get to ask a general if you posed a stumper that was correctly answered. Answering stumpers is just a good-will issue.

Well, D'oh.,. you think I'd know the rules by now Dispirited My bad, blame it on tiredness

This is probably the answer intended, but his show is pre-recorded, not live. I don't know anyone else who has confessed to "relations" lately, though.

It was just on Sportscenter: Have you been assigned playcalling duties for the Washington Redskins offense?

I assume 'this month' is still classed as recent in most people's lives Razz

So yes, this was the intended answer - not a real stumper in that sense, but a half-hearted stab at a potential answer, given the clues to date...

I googled the rules but couldn't find quite what we use. Lepton is thinking of a person whose name starts with L. We have to figure out who it is by asking general yes/no questions. We can only earn the right to ask a general by stumping him with a question about someone with that same initial.

We are using the variant whereby at least one other person needs to know the stumper answer in order to earn the general. So if you know the answres to any of the Stumpers in Lepton's update, post the answer. The person who originally posed the stumper will get to ask a general question.

You may join in at any time.

I ask a stumper: "Did you defeat James Braddock to win the Heavyweight Boxing Championship?"
Lepton says "I am not Joe Louis." (correct)
I ask: "Were you married to Woody Allen and did you star in several of his films?"
Lepton says: "I have no clue." or "I am not Lotte Lenya." (wrong)
I wait for someone else to say "It was Louise Lasser." and then I get to ask a general question to try to narrow the answer. If no one answers within 72 hours it expires and I ask another stumper.

I think we've sort of fallen into a slight modification whereby you can ask another stumper after I've failed to answer yours, but before another player has provided a correct answer. It helps keep the game flowing.

And thanks, Quailman; I would have kicked myself for missing Joe Louis. Felicitous

Keep in mind that when you ask a broad question like that, Lepton may give a correct answer that's not the one you had in mind.

Stumper: Did you lose your heavyweight boxing title to Cassius Clay?

If I had said "Are you a boxer?" he could say "I'm not Joe Louis." but that's not the answer to the stumper I just asked.

Quailman.

Yes, I've been queuing up more stumpers and realise I need to be more specific. Part of the learning process. I'll see what I can do.

(edit) My original stumper changed as it hadn't been answered. Hope that's permitted. I won't do it again.

Thanks.

Just one more main rule - reasearch is NOT allowed for answering stumpers. I guess you could research for posing a stumper, but pointless if no-one can answer it without research, which you'd need in order to be permitted to set a general.

Yes, I did see that on the first post and I'm abiding by it.

It's tricky to pose a stumper that's difficult enough to stump the puzzle setter but easy enough so someone else can answer it...

Thanks for all the advice.
