Hey, so why don't we do a most interesting fictional creature and/or species that may or may not be sentient? Unicorns and jackalope and the Sandman oh my!

The line gets blurry with things like gryffons or aliens, that may be beasts or sentient depending on the source material, and would it be fair to put up "humanoid" races like Timelords, Smurfs, and Crab People (south park) up against Pokemon, Tribbles, and Babelfish? I'm of the "more the merrier" philosophy, so that we could have a mega-bracket.

NOMINATIONS OPEN: Post 20 picks for the most interesting fictional species of all time and all medias (as long as it has never been nor is a real species). The most nominated species get put in the best seeds, while the least nominated will go into run-offs to determine if they'll be let in the bracket.

The Irken race will dominate you all. Hahahaha. No Gir not that button Noooooooo.....(end transmission)

I would love to see a huge mega bracket and this seems like a great category. We would probably end up needing several run-offs just to get the list from the nominations. I'm all for it and would be available if you needed a co-mod, this could get messy.

Take your time making your list if you need it, the category is nearly infinite. Also please avoid looking at others' lists until you've made your own, as it could influence your decisions. Currently there is no deadline, but I wouldn't want to wait more than a month for this phase to be complete.

My first thought for most interesting fictional species was Hobbits. They are, at least, the ones I most enjoy reading about.

I suppose if you are intending only ones that people have claimed actually live on this earth rather than Middle Earth, I would say the fictional species that Tolkien suggested were really just hobbits all along: leprechauns, brownies, and the like.

I'm guessing Chimera is out of the question, right? 'Cause there's only one of her, which makes her more like a character than a species.

The interesting part about these tournaments is when you have vastly different genre competing which are not normally compared, like Classical vs. Rap in music. I say mash humanoids and non-humanoids together.

That said, I would encourage all entries to be actual (well, ficticious) species. I would be disappointed to see occupations (Witch, Wizard, Swordmage, Summoner, Jedi) or unique beings (the Phoenix, Deep Thought, Medusa from Greek Mythology, Spiderman). Other human or nearly-human races (Atlantians, Demi-humans, Stormtroopers) seems to be a grey area.

My first nominees:
Prinnies (Disgaea) - Just explosive demon penguins with helium voices at first glance...
Chocobo (Final Fantasy) - The source of many minigames.
Treecats (D. Weber - Honorverse) - Telepathic hexapods that love celery. Bleek!
Leontine (M. Sagara) - Picked at random out of Aerians, Barrani, Leontine, Tha'alani
Ferengi (Star Trek - Possibly a race) - In DS9 either the Ferengi were well-done or the Dominion was poorly-done. Hm, probably the second.
Dragons - Everyone loves dragons

No, not witches!

Do you know how hard it is to come up with all-female species? There are no all-female species on Star Trek. What's up with that?

The difficulty may have to do with reproduction . . .

Try splitting "Nymphs" into Dryads and Naiads.

My nominations:
Unicorn
vampires
timelords (Doctor Who)
vulcans
phoenix
sphinx
jackalope
pikmin (Pikmin)
yoshis (Super Mario series)
Ood (Doctor Who)
geth (Mass Effect)
dragons
boogeymen
jabberwock
leprechaun
minotaur
godzilla
Audrey Jr. (little shop of Horrors)
manbearpig (south park)
gargoyles

I'm taking as wide as a definition as possible. If there's only one of them, it counts as long as it's a distinct species and not like, the ONLY black sheep or something. Also it need not live on earth, any and all alien species are fair game. Nor does it need to be beastial nor humanoid. I've included geth which are actually AIs that became sentient and (as usual) try to kill everyone.

Also: thank you Amb for putting Smurfs. I had to lop it off my list sadly, glad to see it get a nod.

PLEASE try to keep your list in one post if at all possible, having to chase all the entries down is gonna be rough if you do it one or two at a time, especially since many people will be suggesting joke entries in similar ways.

I'm going to agree that Witch and Hag seem to be humans with magical powers (or in the hag's case, sometimes no powers). Unless you mean a specific type of non-human witch or hag, in which case I need to know what source.

Witte Wieven seem to just be in, as they vary from smart women to half-elvish beings that also live on as a spirit post-death. So you get that one. But not Witch nor Hag.

I would say no because they've referred to them as people/chickens/etc. You'd need to specify what muppet type, like whatever gonzo/grover are. Also, if people could make clear if they are picking noms or just posting out jokes/whatever it would be nice ^_^

I'm very excited with the amount of entries so far, though a little daunted by how many run-offs will have to be done Revenge most foul!

Oh, interesting choices! Also, what were the horses in that book called -- the ones that would always come running from just out of sight if you called them? I remember the time when the main characters (I hesitate to use the term 'heroes') were trapped on a plateau with the only exit blocked by enemies, so they whistled for the horses who climbed up, seconds later, over the edge of the plateau, obviously having just been through an arduous multi-day climb.
