I am not going to divulge many details, but this will be centered around some of the twists in Top Chef Las Vegas, as well as other great quickfires and eliminations challenges from our first Competition of Top GL'er

Only the first 12 can sign up, so SIGN UP NOW!

Note to anyone who have not seen the first one, expect a commitment! There will be new rules and guidelines in terms of deadlines and eliminating players now. If you have never seen this at all, you can go to here or go to here for the hall of fame!

RULES FOR THE COMPETITION

1:Have Fun!
2:At any time, one request for an extension of time per challenge is allowed with majority vote, or when the Mod circumvents the Vote (this will only happen in the point where the majority is not in favor of an extension, and I believe there was a reasonable request made.)
3:Puzzles are judged on three criteria:
Theme : does the puzzle fit the Theme?
Technique: Is the puzzle able to be solved? (according to the challenge)
Style: Is it a cool puzzle?
You will not lose points just because it is a hard puzzle. all puzzles are judged solely on their merits as a puzzle.Difficulty will only lose points if it is detrimental to the style or theme of the round.
4:All puzzles must be submitted to topgler[at]gmail.com, not to my personal PM box. I have had requests for old puzzles from the competition and this makes it easier not only for myself but for the other judges to look at the submissions.
5:A submission will have to have the following things in the email:
A:In the subject line of the email the name of the round (which will be in the post) followed by the puzzle.
B:The solution to the puzzle and its explanation need to be sent in a separate email under subject line name of round solution.
C:Lastly please put your GL name somewhere in the body or subject line of the email.
6More rules will be added as the competition progresses to keep suspense up!Revenge most foul!

Sure. Count me in.

However, I'd like to request that any group activities:
1. ... have lots of extra time added.
2. ... aren't used for eliminations, possibly just some extra benefit. (Perhaps the winning team members get an earlier notification of the next challenge, which will be on fairly short deadline for the members of non-winning teams. Or something like that.) Since you don't have cameras observing the group interaction, it really feels wrong eliminating a group member based on the members' own recap of the process.

yeah there is only one group challenge, and while it will be an elimination challenge, we will have ways to circumvent the hearsay stuff.

I'll join in: goal being more creative puzzling methods instead of my usual "anagram it, put it in a code and hide it" three step rut.

As Resident Genius, I'm in...

Wait, did I ever even receive the Resident Genius plaque? I was sure I had that Glaby around here somewhere.

You know, I think we should coordinate a yearly set of Glabys...I think it would make for an interesting annual hooplah. And it's Glabys, not Glabies, right? I mean, it is Emmys, right? Hmm.

So, should it be an actual award for things that have happened, or a year-long pseudo competition, or an individual event (like olympics)? When I say year-long competition, keep in mind I mean something along the lines of: when you make a puzzle or game or somesuch, you can submit it for a Glaby. Or you can somehow win points toward a Glaby, perhaps for each puzzle and game you win...that type of thing.

Maybe I should move this conversation to somewhere else? Somehow it seemed like it would be good to put here...

Right, but suppose there was a Glaby for Best Performance by a Gamer, would that be, oh, a single game or the entirety of many games?

And it could be a voting system just like the rest of the award shows, if there can be some sort of mostly impartial way to do it.

So, I'm thinking Best Game, Puzzle, Pun, Signature, Performance (game and puzzle), things like that? There would have to be a means to nominate individuals (or teams/groups/pairs/partners, if applicable)...aaanyway. I'll stop talking about it now, heh.

You should make sure you rattle a few people's cages too, if there's anyone in particular you think should be playing.

Ok the first quickfire for the ten of you is simple.

Q1: the 25 word Challenge!

You must create a puzzle using less than 25 words (including tittle). You may not use any punctuation other than for normal English grammar and you may not use pictures. You will lose all of your theme points if you go even one word past your allottment, and may suffer more if the infraction is severe, up to DQ from the round.

You have until February 14th at Midnight to send all puzzles to topgler[at]gmail.com. Any questions must be brought up in this thread, not by PM.

Anyone not sending in a puzzle this round without prior notification in thread that you will miss the Deadline will automatically be tossed out of the competition. This is a one time thing, and won't happen every challenge, and you will get more of an idea further along in the competition

Am I to assume that we are restrained to english words? No numerals (4, etc), single letters that aren't words (B, G, W, etc), nonsense strings of letters (gbbqroc, mimsy, etc.) nor encrypted words (bqqmf for apple)?

I assumed that any of the above would count as one word each.

What about symbols? If I had a puzzle that, say, had a phrase "cat + dog", would that count as two words or three? Not saying I have such a puzzle in mind, but it's best to keep my options open.

you are restrained to english only,

Proper names are allowed, but be prepared to justify who/what they are in your solution, to make sure there are no nonsense words.

Symbols are not allowed.you would have to say "plus" for it to be counted.

As a corollary to the "English words" question, are we allowed to use parts of words (e.g. an NPL puzzle at Conorado asked puzzlers to find words containing various unique tetrads such as CABU and SYLU). If so, do these still count as full words toward our allotment? Does your use of the word "less" rather than "fewer" imply that the number of words need not be an integer? Enthusiastic Grin
May we format or arrange the words? I'm referring to arrangement beyond the simple matter of organizing them in a relevant order, such as positioning words vertically.
Also, regarding the use of "normal punctuation use," how would this work in a scrambling puzzle such as the one lex created for the similar challenge last year?
