Honesty Quiz - November 2010 - Theme free

No research is allowed after seeing the questions. They must be answered solely with the information currently in your head.
No internet, books or consulting other people...or 'accidentally' seeing information.
One point per correct answer with no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions. If you don't know an answer, it's worth guessing. I will accept ONLY your first answer list (send to me via PM). Spelling accuracy is not required for person names. You may freely use pen, paper and simple (non-programmable) calculators.

No entry = no points.

Answers provided when entries close. Quizzes usually last for about 3 weeks until entries dry up. I shall warn players a few days before I provide answers.

This month, the questions do not have a theme.

Q1. What is the nationality of the fictional detective Hercule Poirot?

Q2. In which make of car would you find a flux capacitor?

Q3. Where would you find the Vinson Massif?

Q4. In a race, you overtake the person in second place. In what position are you now?

Q5. Ganesh is a deity from which religion?

Q6. Gamma Rays, Infra red, Microwaves and X Rays. Which of these has the shortest wavelength?

Q7. Who created the Muppets?

Q8. What is an Orrery?

Q9. If you travel due east from New York City, which European country will you encounter first?

Q10. John McClane and Hans Gruber had a battle of wits in which building?

Good Luck.

Google search stats for "Vinson Massif"

This is probably a much bigger spike than the one they had in August 2008.

8/10 for me. I got three right by educated guess. The two I got wrong I just didn't know.

5/10 and two worst answers for sure. At least I warned 3iff in advance about them.

Jaguar.

That's ok. It's just to stop latecomers accidentally seeing a hint of a question...not that anyone is likely to do that...everyone behaves very honestly with this quiz.

Well, a record 17 entries so far this month.

No entries as yet from Termital, Undercover Monk, Mole and Referee - players who have generally submitted entries in the past few months.

There's another week at least to get entries in...wonder if we can reach 20?

Honesty Quiz - November 2010 - Theme free - ANSWERS

Numbers in brackets indicate the correct answers from a record 23 entries including quite a few new players.

Q1. What is the nationality of the fictional detective Hercule Poirot?
Belgian. (20) One player couldn't decide between French and Belgian and picked wrong.

Q2. In which make of car would you find a flux capacitor?
A Delorean DMC-12 modded by Doc Brown and fitted with a Flux Capacitor (Back to the Future). A couple of 'reasonable' answers of an electric car but they didn't get a point. (19)

Q3. Where would you find the Vinson Massif?
It's the highest mountain range in Antarctica. Not in a wine cellar or Mars or the Pacific or Finland (6)

Q4. In a race, you overtake the person in second place. In what position are you now?
Second. (Or a VERY strong first.) An old chestnut that I expected everyone to get right but I did catch out one player. (22)

Q5. Ganesh is a deity from which religion?
Hinduism (22)

Q6. Gamma Rays, Infra red, Microwaves and X Rays. Which of these has the shortest wavelength?
Gamma Rays. Got a few people guessing here. (21)

Q7. Who created the Muppets?
Jim Henson. (20) Many people thought this was a trick question. Certainly not my intention.

Q8. What is an Orrery?
A mechanical model of the solar system (or part of) (11). Puzzled quite a few people and a couple thought it might be a bird (after the nightjar of last month) That would have been sneaky, wish I'd thought of it.

Q9. If you travel due east from New York City, which European country will you encounter first?
Portugal. I originally misworded the question, asking about New York which can also be interpreted as the state. However this could have produced 3 valid answers...so I quickly amended the question before too many people noticed it. (13) Best answers by far were Greenland, Iceland, Finland and Stockholm!

Q10. John McClane and Hans Gruber had a battle of wits in which building?
The two adversaries in Die Hard fought it out in the Nakatomi building in Los Angeles. (5) Lots of wrong answers suggesting amongst others the Chrysler building, the Empire state building and the World Trade Centre...all in New York! I did expect many more correct answers for this one.

A generally easy set of questions with a high average score of 6.9

Nov Pts

10 Mole
9 Quailman, Scurra, Duke Gnome
8 Internet Stranger, jesternl, Wordcross, Groza528, Termital
7 Lord Kinbote, ralphmerridew, Puzzlescot, Jaguar, KradDrol, jesus_saves
6 Zag, Trojan Horse, Amb, Undercover Monk
5 Sentran, Antrax
4 referee
2 Bgg1996

Total Score

95 Scurra
71 Puzzlescot
66 Jesternl
64 Groza528
64 Internet Stranger
57 Zag
57 Quailman
57 Duke Gnome
53 Jaguar
48 Referee
47 Termital
33 Undercover Monk
26 Mole (3)
23 ralphmerridew (3)
18 Trojan Horse (3)

Best 6 scores

56 Scurra
51 Internet Stranger
48 Groza528
46 Jesternl
46 Duke Gnome
44 Puzzlescot
42 Jaguar
42 Termital
40 Quailman
40 Referee
39 Zag
31 Undercover Monk
26 Mole (3)
23 ralphmerridew (3)
18 Trojan Horse (3)

Scurra looks to have a stranglehold on both scoring aspects. However, Mole has a slightly better correct answer percentage but Mole has only entered 3 times whereas Scurra has entered all 11 quizzes. Scurra, Jesternl and Puzzlescot have 100% entry records.

The final quiz of the year is a picture quiz and that will be online soon.

Two indirect movie questions this time! Of course, I got neither, though I was pretty pleased that I, at least, knew what movie the building one came from. If the question had been "What fictional car includes a flux capacitor?" then I MIGHT have gotten it, but I didn't even realize it was a movie question until after I looked it up.

BTW, 3iff, I'd like to state for the record that I've enjoyed these quizzes. I've been surprised and pleased that a complete newcomer to GL (when you started) has followed through for the entire year. As I'm sure you were told when you started (possibly by me), that newcomers have trouble getting people to join their games because they so often disappear as quickly as they appear. I'm glad you've been staying around.

I hadn't seen these quizzes before since I was gone from GL for a while, but looking back over the past ones, this is a great game and you've really done well running it! I think I would have got 7 or 8 on this one (never seen Die Hard, don't know who Hercule Poirot is, not sure about Vinson Massif but I might have guessed Antarctica; rest are gimmes for me).

I'm somewhat embarrassed for Zag that he didn't know what a flux capacitor is! Embarassed (hint: a "flux capacitor" isn't a real thing)

I was hoping that everyone knew that a flux capacitor wasn't a real object.

Newcomer? I've been lurking since 2005...

The quiz is nice because it's low maintenance and players come and go as they please. It's not much effort from me and I have a few weeks to think of questions.

I was planning to finish the quiz at the end of the year but if there's a demand to keep it going then I can run it again next year. Is there a demand?

Spotted on Monday in our local free paper. See Nov 22nd cartoon. You think my questions are hard?

23 entries on a GL game should answer your question for you Revenge most foul! (I didn't think there were that many active members!)

Thanks for doing this, and I'm looking forward to doing better next year...

This quiz is of a format that I feel is easy to participate in and a lot of fun. I'm not the most active of people on these forums, but I have enjoyed these and will continue to enjoy these if you continue to host them!

Thanks 3iff!

And a ditto from me too. I am pretty certain that it takes you far longer to write each of these quizzes than it does for any one of us to answer them (let along the time taken t score them) and I appreciate the effort.

Naturally I would also be in favour of the quiz returning next year. Revenge most foul!

If anything, demand seems to be picking up.

Is it bragging to say I knew one of the comic strip Bulgaria answers?(Well, two if you include the capital.)
