This would be using lexprod's very clever idea for tic-tac-toe bots. However, rather than just submitting a single bot and it gets compared against all the rest, you would submit new ones for each round. This gives you the chance to research your opponent and possibly outsmart him. (See lexprod's excellent description in that thread for how to make a bot and how they are compared.)
Match: A match is made up of "Rounds" and is a race to 3 points. If the players are tied at 3 points, rounds will continue until the tie is broken.
Round: A round consists of two games of tic-tac-toe. For every Round, each player sends me a PM with TWO tic-tac-toe bots on it, one for the game in which he goes first, one for the game in which he goes second. Both games will be resolved and points awarded. For each game, a win is worth 1 point to the winner and a tie is worth half a point to each, so every round is worth exactly 2 points total.
If we don't have a power-of-2 number of players, then rather than getting a bye, the extra players in the first round will be facing a computer player who makes his bots randomly. If one of the computer players ends up winning the tournament, I will laugh and laugh.
Well, we still have a week to go, but it seems like this is all we will get.
!!! Important !!! A proper entry looks like the following, In the Subject of the PM,
Bot name [bot for the game in which you go first] [bot for the game in which you go second]
Example:
MegaCrusher: 123456789 321654987
You can optionally have "Going first:" and "Going second:" if you like. Also, the first two letters of the bot name will be what is used inside the board, so you might want to consider that.
Invalid bots will get random values. Too long, too short, duplicating a digit, and containing characters other than the digits 1-9 all are reasons for being invalid.
Remember, put it in the subject line of the PM.

/in, darn it.
Edit: It's interesting how these bots are symmetrical "about the x and y axis." It would be interesting and reduce randomness if all 4 rotational combinations were tested for each pairing instead of just 1. (That would get pretty tedius for a human "host," though.) |

I will almost certainly write a program to run the games, so maybe I'll try it, though that won't be the official game. I think that the guessing which side and direction is part of the Roshambo aspect of the game. Also, trying all variations will probably result in a tie overall, with any reasonable bots. |

Well, we have 8 right now, so I'm going to close the entries unless I get at least 4 more before Feb 1, when I said I would start.
Also, all the people who have signed up, please answer the quiz that I have added. I want to know if everyone is comfortable with the rules, or would like a practice round before we start. I'll make sure that no one is practicing against their first round opponent. |

so for clarification:
Game: one tic-tac-toe game. Round: two simultaneous TTT games where one player plays as X in one and O in the other (with a different program for each, if wanted). Match: however many rounds it takes for one player to reach 3 points.

Well, we still have a week to go, but it seems like this is all we will get.
If anyone would like a practice round, send it to me now. I'll match up the people who send it in, and the only changes I will make to the random match-ups of the real game is that you won't meet your practice round opponent in the first round.
!!! Important !!! A proper entry looks like the following, In the Subject of the PM,
Bot name [bot for the game in which you go first] [bot for the game in which you go second]
Example:
MegaCrusher: 123456789 321654987

I only got three practice round entries, so I played them against each other all the way around. Since two of the names did not include the username at all, I modified the one name that did include it, in order to keep anonymity.
Tom Servo vs. De-Bot: one win each for 2 points each
Crawling Blockerbot vs. De-Bot: one win each for 2 points each
Tom Servo vs. Crawling Blockerbot: two wins for Crawling Blockerbot for 4 points!

Send in your bots for next round! Amb and UM, check the proper format! (In the subject of the note, with no extraneous characters in the bot portion.)
If anyone REALLY wants to make it easy on me, send it formatted like either of these (which is how I deliver the arguments to the constructor of Java class TicTacToe):
("milkshake", "Crawling Blockerbot", "564193728", "513724689");
("Quailman", "Biohazard", "573218946", "396127485");

I thought it was a race to 3 points so I should already have lost. _________________ The Classic Blunders:

Oh, I did say that, but I also said that a win is worth 1 and a tie is worth 1/2. Just double everything. Sorry.
