Hi,
Welcome to Picture Hunt!. This game is based on the French board game Dixit. It is a game of creative thinking and intentional vagueness.
Here's how to play in five steps:
1. One player (the "hunt master") picks from anywhere in the world one picture, and creates one phrase to describe, caption, or otherwise relate to that picture. They post their phrase.
2. Everyone and anyone who wants to do so PMs the hunt master a picture of their own, with the phrase in mind. These pictures are intended to distract and deceive the other players.
3. The hunt master recieves the pictures and posts all of the pictures along with his own in random order.
4. Everyone votes by PMing the hunt master the number of the picture they think is his.
5. The hunt master reveals the votes and points are scored.
Here's how points are scored (it's important!):
1. If anyone voted for the hunt master's picture, that player/those players and the hunt master himself all get three points each.
2. If no one voted for the hunt master's picture, or everyone did, everyone (in the world! Yes, even the Dalai Lama) except the hunt master gets two points.
3. In any case, everyone except the hunt master gets one point for every person who votes for their picture.
Points are good! For now let's say we're playing to 20.
There's just two other rules I can think of: Cheating is prohibited, and keep it PG.
Traditionally the person whose birthday is the closest goes first. Since, as far as you know, it's my birthday right now, I'll start things off!

Round Number 1-
Phrase (mine): Bananana!
Points-
Me: 0
You: 0
The Dalai Lama: 0
So, to start playing, PM me a picture that you think people will vote for given the phrase. |

So if 10 players are playing, and everyone guess the hunt master's picture, they get 2 points each and the hunt master gets 9? _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

Woops! Clarified in the original post.
The points for people voting for your picture are just for the non-hunt masters who are trying to trick eachother. The hunt master just gets three points no matter what if someone but not everyone finds his. The point is to make it obscure enough that not everyone gets it, but unobscure enough that someone gets it.

You can just PM me the URL. (If it isn't already on the internet you can use a file sharing site like this one).
Thanks for the PMs! I'll post the pictures as soon as I get five or a reasonable amount of time passes. |

Got it, 3iff.
In response to a PMed question: Yes Bananana! with that many 'na's is the correct phrase. |

| Awesome, five pics other than mine already. I'll wait a little while longer to post them for voting in case some other people wanted to submit something. People can join in on any old round, though, so I think it should be fine for there to be a pretty quick turnaround! |

Great! Here are the candidates.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Commence voting! To vote, PM me the number of the entry you wish to vote for (you're trying to find mine, the one for which the phrase was created). Even those who didn't submit a picture of their own can vote if they wish.
Also if anybody wants to volunteer to be next round's hunt master, they can and should.
Remember: Bananana! |

Hm, yes, that darned Lama.
I suppose if he doesn't send in a vote by tomorow we should just press on without him. He will still get points if anyone voted for his picture. |

All the votes are in! Here we go...
7: Two people voted Cordelia's entry, number seven, the nana with bananas, bananana! Very witty (I was impressed), but not the original.
6: Unfortunately for Quailman, no one voted for Samantha Fox of Bananorama
5: One person voted for Dented Ford's entry, number five. Manamana!
4: Unfortunately for 3iff, nobody voted for bananagrams.
3: One person voted for Zag's highly unique photo.
1: One person voted for Jack_Ian's bananaman in shades.
And one, smart, knowledgeful person, Jack_Ian, voted for the correct entry: Number two, Beethoven:
He even provided this link! http://w3.rz-berlin.mpg.de/cmp/beethoven_sym5_1.wav
What is Beethoven's favorite fruit? Ba-na-na-na!
Here's the score:
Jack_Ian: 4
milkshake: 3
Cordelia: 2
Dented_Ford and Zag: 1
3iff, Quailman, and the Dalai Lama: 0
So, Cordelia is up next. And that means I'll get to vote and make an entry so watch out. |

bah! I should've known it would be the one for which you could make no possible connection to a banana.
... and if you're familiar with Samantha Fox, you can understand why milkshake requested that I send a different photo than the first one - one on which the exposure had been adjusted. |

I know the strangest things.
The picture I posted was of the artist Thomas Baumgärtel who is famous for spraying graffiti of bananas on walls of places he found worthy. He did one on a fruit stall near where I used to live in Germany. In retrospect, I should have posted a picture without a banana in it but that referenced him directly and let the user figure out the connection.
Also, I'm pretty sure Samantha Fox was never in Banarama.

Hah, yes, occasionally when playing Dixit I just abandon the phrase and play "one of these things is not like the others." |

Question.
What would happen if the puzzle setter and a competitor were to choose the same picture? A long shot I know. Worth a bucket of points perhaps? |

That would be cool. Outright win I'd say, but impossible to referee without a disinterested third party.
I expect that the Hunt Master would need to choose another picture for themselves to avoid confusion.
If 2 competitors choose the same picture, then it should be posted once and they each get points should someone vote for it.
At least that's what I'd do. |

No of course not. The ideal situation for you I think is that only one person gets it right... that person can't be you!

That would indeed be cool. I guess I'd say post them both and just let fate decide (also note that two non-hunt master folk could concievably post the same picture. ) Jack_Ian's way would work too. |

In the dictionary game, a person who submits the correct definition as a fake only gets the points for "choosing correct definition". S/he doesn't get anything special for it, and loses the opportunity to get points for getting people to pick his/her fake definition. (The duplicate is removed from the voting.)
I'd say that a person who duplicated the hunt master's photo gets three points from rule 1, possibly two points from rule 2, but can't get any rule 3 points.
If two competitors choose the same photo, I'd say that the rule 3 points shoudl be split evenly between them. |
