Honesty Quiz - July 2010 - The 20th Century

No research is allowed after seeing the questions. They must be answered solely with the information currently in your head.
No internet, books or consulting other people...or 'accidentally' seeing information.
One point per correct answer with no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions. If you don't know an answer, it's worth guessing. I will accept ONLY your first answer list (send to me via PM). Spelling accuracy is not required for person names. You may freely use pen, paper and simple (non-programmable) calculators.

No entry = no points.

Answers provided when entries close. Quizzes usually last for about 3 weeks until entries dry up. I shall warn players a few days before I provide answers.

This month, each question is based on an event of each decade of the 20th century.

1901-1910 Which event killed around 3,000 people on 18th April 1906?

1911-1920 Where were the summer olympics of 1916 held?

1921-1930 Who's tomb did Howard Carter discover in Egypt in 1922?

1931-1940 In which year did both the Hindenberg disaster and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart occur?

1941-1950 On which date did the Normandy landings occur (exact date please)?

1951-1960 Which very famous European (born 14th March 1879) died on 18th April 1955?

1961-1970 In which year did Yuri Gagarin become the first man in space?

1971-1980 Which of the following films was NOT released in this time period (considering original US/UK release dates)?
The Godfather, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rocky, Star Wars.

1981-1990 What exploded on 28th January 1986, killing 7 people? (be specific)

1991-2000 Which region, measuring 426 sq miles/1104 sq km changed hands on the 1st of July 1997?

Good Luck.

Honesty requires me to tell you that it is July, rather than June.

/sent. Not likely to be my finest hour. I tend to remember when things happened in relative order, which is so not what's required here.

Honesty Quiz - June 2010 - The 20th Century

This month, each question is based on an event of each decade of the 20th century.

Number in brackets indicates number of correct answers from the 15 participants.

1901-1910 Which event killed around 3,000 people on 18th April 1906?
The San Fransisco earthquake (5). Alternative suggestions were sinking of the Titanic (1912), A volcano, the Great Chicago fire or the Johnstown flood.

1911-1920 Where were the summer olympics of 1916 held?
A trick question (6). Most of Europe was busy fighting WW 1 so the games, scheduled to be in Berlin were cancelled.

1921-1930 Who's tomb did Howard Carter discover in Egypt in 1922?
Tutankhamun. (15) I ignored the many spelling variations but everyone got this correct.

1931-1940 In which year did both the Hindenberg disaster and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart occur?
1937 (6). A bit of guesswork required for this. Some lucky people had watched a program just a week or so earlier!

1941-1950 On which date did the Normandy landings occur (exact date please)?
June the 6th 1944 (10). Everyone got 1944 but some picked a different June date or thought it happened in July.

1951-1960 Which very famous European (born 14th March 1879) died on 18th April 1955?
Albert Einstein (9). Most interesting wrong answer was Stalin who was born in the same year but died in 1953. Wikipedia has his birth year as 1878 which Stalin subsequently changed to 1879...

1961-1970 In which year did Yuri Gagarin become the first man in space?
1961 (11). Two wrong answers suggested 1967 and 1968 which didn't really leave much time between the first man in space and the first moon landing.

1971-1980 Which of the following films was NOT released in this time period (considering original US/UK release dates)?
The Godfather, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rocky, Star Wars.
Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981 (14). Just one failure and they picked the first of these films to be made...the Godfather 1972.

1981-1990 What exploded on 28th January 1986, killing 7 people? (be specific)
The Challenger space shuttle (13). Both wrong answers picked the interesting Chernobyl nuclear accident which happened in April 1986.

1991-2000 Which region, measuring 426 sq miles/1104 sq km changed hands on the 1st of July 1997?
Hong Kong (13). Just 2 wrong answers, East Timor and the Gaza Strip. One player said Hong Kong..."Just to say something". It's always worth having a guess.

10 Duke Gnome, Jaguar
9 Scurra
8 Trojan Horse, Internet Stranger
7 Puzzlescot
6 Dragon Phoenix, Termital, Referee, Jesternl, Groza528, Undercover Monk
5 Zag, Quailman, Lepton

A perfect score for both Duke Gnome and Jaguar. Congratulations to them.

Total Score (from 7 entries)
60 Scurra
46 Puzzlescot
41 Jesternl
36 Zag (6 entries)

Scurra continues to dominate

Best 6 scores
53 Scurra
42 Puzzlescot
39 Jesternl
36 Zag
35 Internet Stranger *
35 Groza528 *
32 Quailman
31 Referee *
31 Duke Gnome *
31 Jaguar *
29 Lepton

(* only 5 entries so far)

Scurra needs an 8+ to improve this score, Puzzlescot needs a 7+. Anyone with only 5 entries so far can put themselves in contention with a good score in the coming months.
