Never heard of this. The original game appears quite old. Would it still be worth playing? or would it be like when I hooked up the old Nintendo and discovered Tecmo Bowl wasn't as awesome as I remembered?

All I can say is "yes". It's still a lovely set of puzzles, and playing on the old monochrome Mac emulated version helps it stand up far better than any other version (I bought the original game three times for different formats, and that's not counting the copies I bought for other people!)

If you have any interest in word-based puzzles, then this is an essential game to play. Sure, it's not hideously difficult, but it's beautifully put together and the structure is magical.

At the bequest of Ref I played through it for the first time about 1.5 years ago.
It was well worth the effort. Absolutely great game. Good puzzles, good story, good game.

I have it and am most of the way done. The puzzles are nearly all word based. I wished there was a bit more diversity or challenges like Quintin. I did get much better at seven letter word jumbles!

Considering that $40 buys just a few movie tickets or two dinners The Fool and His Money is "good enough". But I wouldn't say excellent. And maybe the finale will be outstanding.

It's a tough call. Personally, I think it's more than worth the money - but then again, I paid for it a decade ago. There are few enough of these sorts of games around that supporting it seems like a no-brainer to me.

I am probably about 3/4 through at the moment (have passed the second gate but still have several of the "main" set to go) and I agree that the variety of puzzles is less interesting than the original but the challenge is still just as tough. It's definitely more like doing a whole bunch of crosswords though, rather than the more radical puzzles that we have become used to over the last couple of decades - there aren't many big a-ha moments (although there are one or two: I was so happy when I finally passed the first gate because it required more than a bit of attention.)

I am quite pleased to learn that it hasn't been widely pirated, but I guess that a niche game within a niche hobby wouldn't attract that much attention! And there's a registration code needed as well which I suspect may have been hand-crafted so reverse-engineering would be tricky.
