Honesty Quiz - August 2010 - Theme free

No research is allowed after seeing the questions. They must be answered solely with the information currently in your head.
No internet, books or consulting other people...or 'accidentally' seeing information.
One point per correct answer with no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions. If you don't know an answer, it's worth guessing. I will accept ONLY your first answer list (send to me via PM). Spelling accuracy is not required for person names. You may freely use pen, paper and simple (non-programmable) calculators.

No entry = no points.

Answers provided when entries close. Quizzes usually last for about 3 weeks until entries dry up. I shall warn players a few days before I provide answers.

This month, the questions do not have a theme.

Q1. Who is the brother of Sherlock Holmes?

Q2. Azerbaijan borders which sea?

Q3. What was the name of Jacques Cousteau's ship?

Q4. Who composed the opera Fidelio?

Q5. On a scrabble board, how many triple letter squares are there?

Q6. "Mia kusenveturilo estas plena je angiloj" is a famous Monty python phrase written in Esperanto. What is the English translation?

Q7. Who is the only person to play THEMSELVES in Star Trek the Next Generation.? (you HAVE heard of this famous person).

Q8. M1 is the Crab nebula, M31 is the Andromeda Galaxy. What does the "M" stand for?

Q9. What is the volume of a sphere of radius 2 units?

Q10. What is the opposite of nocturnal (active at night, sleep during day)?

Good Luck.

Ouch. I've just received my score. I thought I had done much better than that.

Memo to self: remember to read the questions as they actually are, and not what you think they are. Doh.

Hah! I average 2 lost points per round by doing that, and I can't afford to lose them because there are so many I just do not know. I guessed right on one this time, so I might have pulled out another 5.

That was tough!

I've looked up the answers now I've sent them off. Not many right...
However, a ludicrous stab in the dark turns out to have been correct on another!!

Honesty Quiz - August 2010 - Theme free

There were 13 entries this month for a quiz with a wide range of scores. The average score was 4.8.
Numbers in brackets indicate the number of correct answers. My thanks to Termital who provided an answer essay that was longer than my set of questions. It was interesting reading and much appreciated.

Q1. Who is the brother of Sherlock Holmes?
Mycroft Holmes (6). Not Moriarty as someone thought.

Q2. Azerbaijan borders which sea?
The Caspian Sea (6). The Black sea, Baltic and Mediterranean were all suggested.

Q3. What was the name of Jacques Cousteau's ship?
Calypso (5)

Q4. Who composed the opera Fidelio?
Ludwin van Beethoven (5) "Oh come on - this question has been retired from quizzes in the 70s. Fidelio is Beethoven's only opera." said an entrant, Perhaps, but only 4 other people knew the answer!

Q5. On a scrabble board, how many triple letter squares are there?
12 (4). Some guesswork required here. Most people confidently said 8. At least one misread triple letter as triple word.

Q6. "Mia kusenveturilo estas plena je angiloj" is a famous Monty python phrase written in Esperanto. What is the English translation?
From a sketch of an English/Hungarian phrasebook filled with useless sentences...specifically "My hovercraft is full of eels" (5). Perhaps a too-obscure phrase but one player essentially worked it out from the Esperanto (I promise not to say who that was) and while they didn't get an exact translation it would have been churlish to deny them a point.

Q7. Who is the only person to play THEMSELVES in Star Trek the Next Generation.? (you HAVE heard of this famous person).
Stephen Hawking, playing poker with Data, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein in the episode "Descent Pt 1".(8)
A few speculative guesses hit the mark. (Ronald Reagan was my favourite wrong answer)

Q8. M1 is the Crab nebula, M31 is the Andromeda Galaxy. What does the "M" stand for?
Messier, Charles who built a catalogue of significant astronomical objects...things that weren't comets.(4)

Q9. What is the volume of a sphere of radius 2 units?
Formula is 4/3 pi R cubed. 33.52 cubic units. (9)
Zag gave an answer to 30 decimal places. That's dedication to providing a right answer. I've no idea if 28 of those digits were correct.

Q10. What is the opposite of nocturnal (active at night, sleep during day)?
Diurnal (11) I accepted various spellings of this...and there were many.

Scores

8 Termital, Groza528

We were told calculators were allowed for basic arithmetic (and, I assumed, for the value of pi). I just used the standard Windows XP calculator and hit Ctrl-C when finished with it, then Ctrl-V into the PM. I did also write the exact answer, in case anyone cares.

Yep, calculators are allowed...

Q9. What is the volume of a sphere of radius 2 units?
32/3 * pi which approxiimately = 33.510321638291127876934862754981 cu. units

was the answer I received.

I also had an entry from a new player...about 6 hours AFTER supplying the answers. Regrettably I cannot accept the entry even though it was answered honestly.

The next quiz will appear later this week once I've caught up with work...

I was only asking if calculators were allowed - no need for a judge and jury to get involved! Almost Fonz Cool

So why couldn't you accept a late entry? It is an honesty quiz. Any nefarious participants could just as easily look the answers up on the web, so why disallow that person just because the answers are more convenient?

The extension of that is that anyone joining new should be able to submit their honest answers for all the monthly rounds so far and be counted.

I was simply confirming that calculators were permitted...I wasn't making any accusations against anyone.

As for late entries...I quote "Answers provided when entries close."
However, there is no doubt in my mind that the entry was honest and I have no problem with including the entry if there are no objections.

So unless I have any objections (by PM if you wish) then I will include the late entry.

As for allowing entries from previous months...that's a step too far...and it's too much back-work for me

Well, I've had no objections so I'll include Sentran as a contestant with 2 out of 10.

As he (she?) said..."I'm sure it was pretty obvious that I didn't look at the answers prior to posting, with only 2 of 10 correct."

However, I would appreciate receiving entries before I publish the answers...but being a honesty quiz does have its own set of morals that are different to normal games...and we seem to have a very honest group here.

September questions are prepared but I need to reconsider a couple of them and I'm busy at work...I'll make every effort to get the new quiz published on Friday.

It is excellent timing, of course, because I knew that one. Extreme Delectation

BTW, I have to say that Stephen Fry has got to be the best imaginable choice for the role. I love his stuff. Score one for the casting director.

He's not nearly fat enough to play that part. Then again, neither was Mark Gatiss, and he was pretty damn good. I agree that it is inspired casting though.
