Honesty Quiz - October 2010 - Theme free
No research is allowed after seeing the questions. They must be answered solely with the information currently in your head.
No internet, books or consulting other people...or 'accidentally' seeing information.
One point per correct answer with no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions. If you don't know an answer, it's worth guessing. I will accept ONLY your first answer list (send to me via PM). Spelling accuracy is not required for person names. You may freely use pen, paper and simple (non-programmable) calculators.
No entry = no points.
Answers provided when entries close. Quizzes usually last for about 3 weeks until entries dry up. I shall warn players a few days before I provide answers.
This month, the questions do not have a theme.
Q1. Discovered in 1799, what became the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphics?
Q2. What is a saltire?
Q3. Which artist produced works entitled "Belvedere", "Another World" and "Relativity" amongst others?
Q4. What are the chances of rolling exactly 10 with 3 normal 6 sided dice?
Q5. What are the three colours found on the Italian flag?
Q6. What is the largest body to be found in the asteroid belt? (It's approx 950km/590miles in diameter)
Q7. What is a nightjar?
Q8. In the NATO phonetic alphabet, where A is Alpha, B Bravo, C Charlie, which word is used to signify U?
Q9. The films "Blade Runner" and "Alien" were both directed by which person?
Q10. What is the capital of Chile?
Good Luck. |

I'm thinking of finishing the quiz in December with a picture quiz...10 self-contained pictures/questions.
So how do I get the pictures to contestants? I don't have a web area where I can store them and due to the fact that I'm going to have to edit some of them I won't be able to use existing internet pictures. Also sending you to an existing website to see a picture is likely to give away the answer.
Advice appreciated. |

| Host them on Imageshack or something of the like. Then just provide links to the pictures if you don't want to show the actual picture. |

Oh, I meant to respond to 3iff's earlier question about the pictures.
If imageshack isn't working for you, I'd be glad to host them on zag.net for you.
Also, I highly recommend the free Photoshop-like tool Paint.net, which is at getpaint.net, in spite of its name. I have, so far, only found one thing that I wanted but couldn't figure out how to do, and I suspect that it was user inadequacy, not the program's.
(I wanted to take an existing image and change its background color to be transparent. It has an easy color-change tool, but it wasn't handling the fringes of the object, where there were a range of colors that faded from the image color to the background color. I wanted them to change to be fading from the image color to transparent, but it didn't do that.) |

Zag,
Thanks for the offer...I think that might be easier for me...wasn't keen on imageshack. This will probaby be a one-off and I hate registering for things as they seem to insist on all sorts of personal info (which I fake anyway).
I use an oldish version of paintshop-pro which does most of the things I want to do. I'll check out that program anyway.
I've had that same problem with changing the background colour and having fringing issues...In my PSPro there is a facility to affect 'nearby' colours (those close to the base colour) but it's generally something I don't need to do. Perhaps I might be able to try?
Ok, I'll start preparing my picture questions. Any limits on size, format, Kb? PM me if it's easier. |

As long as they are reasonable. Set them to be 96 ppi and a reasonable size, and it will be fine. |

Regarding image hosting, I am very happy with photobucket. Their policy actually encourages embedding in other sites, such as in a forum post here. They do require registering, but far as I recall (joined about a decade ago), they play nice with you and your (fake) info. And once I had the option available, I found that I make use of it a few times a year.
I wonder if I ran afoul of a Bayesian filter just now . _________________

Honesty Quiz - October 2010 - Theme free - Answers
15 entries this month. A notable absence was Puzzlescot...spoiling his 100% entry record.
Numbers in brackets indicated the number of correct answers.
Q1. Discovered in 1799, what became the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphics?
The Rosetta Stone (15). A rare 100% success rate

It's a diagonal cross (Like an "X"). Look at a scottish flag. (5)
Q3. Which artist produced works entitled "Belvedere", "Another World" and "Relativity" amongst others?
M.C.Escher (9). Dali was a popular answer
Q4. What are the chances of rolling exactly 10 with 3 normal 6 sided dice?
There are 27 chances from the 216 combinations. That's 1 in 8 or 12.5%. Any of those answers were acceptable (12)
Q5. What are the three colours found on the Italian flag?
Green, White and Red (13).
Q6. What is the largest body to be found in the asteroid belt? (It's approx 950km/590miles in diameter)
Ceres (8)
Q7. What is a nightjar?
A bird (7). Many guesses suggested a chamber pot...
Q8. In the NATO phonetic alphabet, where A is Alpha, B Bravo, C Charlie, which word is used to signify U?
Uniform (13)
Q9. The films "Blade Runner" and "Alien" were both directed by which person?
Ridley Scott (13)
Q10. What is the capital of Chile?
Santiago (9).
Generally an easy set of questions, producing an average score of 7.1

Bah! I blanked on Ridley Scott, but knew that Nightjars, aka Goatsuckers, include Nighthawks, Chuck-Will's-Widow, and Whippoorwills. They're primarily nocturnal.
And Escher would have been my second guess after Dali. |

I could do 10 picture questions on maths...how's that sound?
I don't think the planned picture round is all that difficult (but I would say that, wouldn't I). I would be surprised if you scored less than 7 (your lowest score for any month). |

While math and/or geometry would certainly help my score (and pictures is likely to be a disaster for me), you should make the quiz you want to make. Don't let Scurra push you around. (He could get a zero and everyone else a 10 and he would still be in the lead.) |

No-one is pushing me around...I'm doing the quiz I want. I'm sure Scurra is only lightheartedly complaining...I know he doesn't like maths questions but he doesn't seem to bad at them.
I'm curious why people think the picture questions will be more difficult. For me, it's just a different way of presenting questions...anyway, we shall see. |

Dang! Not been on GL for a while due to preparing the UK team for the WPC (in progress right now, though we aren't doing too well )
I looked at the Qs and submitted an email right away. I didn't scroll down, just in case the answers were posted. Dang dang dang! I'm not sure what our stance is on late, but honest, entries? I missed a couple of obvious ones, by the way (kick self!). Oh well. Only a few days until November's issue.. _________________ http://www.ukpuzzles.org/ |

It's because I don't appear to have had an entry from you for the October quiz. (or any quiz). Are you sure you sent in your answers?
I'm happy to accept new entries at any time (there are 3 new players for November). |
