The local boy scout district has a website with leaders names and phone numbers. I asked why they couldn't put e-mail addresses there also. The answer was to avoid phishing, resulting in excessive spam.

Is this a big risk? Is there a way around it?

Would it work to make an image of the whole page, or at least the name, ph#, e-mail table and display that?

Replace myname@boyscouts.org with myname at boyscouts dot org.

Or make them/buy them a decent spam filter.

I've given up trying to keep my email address from getting out there. I use Thunderbird for email, and its spam filter is terrific. I have it put everything it thinks is spam in a separate folder which I go through about once a week. I almost never see spam, and it is even less common for it to put something I actually want into the spam folder.

A simple solution is to use an image for the @ sign and leave everything else in text. It's slightly inconvenient to email this way (since when you copy/paste you'll have to fill in the @ yourself) but it's more comfortable than having the entire thing as an image, it allows people with poor eyesight to see the address (contrary to Chuck's solution) and it requires no coding skills that would be otherwise required.
I would be much more worried about my cellphone number getting out. You guys don't have cellphone spam? (SMS, call/hangup, recoding calls you, etc)

Zag, you could do something much cooler since you have your own domain. You can always give you email address as <name of guy/site you give it to> @ your domain, then when you get spam you know when the address was gotten from, and you can block that particular incoming address @ zag.net.
Not that automated spam filters are bad, gmail's is quite good as well, my only problem with spam is that for some inexplicable reason, the Indian Times routinely publishes my email address as offering jobs in IT, and I get 5-6 resumes per such listing.

Another alternative is to add a 'send us an email page' to the website.
One of the form elements is the name of the person the email should go to (rather than the actual email address). The translation of name to address will be done at the server which leaves the email addresses hidden from public eyes.
Optionally such a form can also be protected by a CAPTCHA to prevent bots from using it.

Antrax, I used to do that. In fact, I still have several places that know me as TheirURL@zag.net. However, I had to turn off the auto-forward of all unrecognized user names, because that did cause me to get flooded with stuff. It's amazing how much the spammers just try to guess user names. That was before using Thunderbird, I guess, but still I don't want my spam folder to get so filled that I wouldn't be able to go through it reasonably.

And it's too much of a pain to make a new email address every time I want to sign up for something. But when I used to do it, I caught quite a few companies selling their lists. The worst offender was GotFruit, since I bought a few things from them. They had the big "We Respect Your Privacy" page on their site, but I got tons of porn spam coming to gotfruit@zag.net. As a thank you, I worked out the email addresses of their executives, sent them a nasty note about the situation, and then put their emails into a few porn sites. Extreme Delectation

I can refer you to Intel if you'd like, I'm sure there's an Intel somewhere near you.
