Honesty Quiz 2011

10 quiz questions per month with two categories of winning. Highest score over the year and Best 6 scores throughout the year. Even if you might not know many answers for a particular month, there's no advantage to not making an entry.

For answering the questions, you agree to not use ANY reference or research materials. You may only use pen/pencil, paper and if necessary a simple calculator. You may not use the internet, encyclopedias or reference books, neither may you ask anyone else for assistance.

Once the quiz appears, you will have 2 to 3 weeks to get your entry to me (by private message). Most players seem to read the questions and send in their answers straight away. The maximum deadline will be the end of the month that the questions are set. I will accept ONLY the first set of answers you give. If I don't understand an answer then I may contact you for clarification.

Each correct answer is worth 1 point. There is no penalty for an unanswered or incorrect answer.

Exact spelling is not required as long as it's obvious what you mean.

The questions will hopefully avoid any UK or US bias and should be answerable by anyone. Some questions will need an inspired guess. Questions for each month will be varied, however, it's quite possible to get three questions of a similar nature...and then nothing on that subject for the next couple of quizzes. For a taster of what to expect check out the Honesty Quiz threads for the months of 2010.

Last year the quiz was contested in a great spirit with all players being very fair minded and courteous. I look forward to 2011 operating in the same congenial manner. Please avoid discussing questions on the forum until the answers for that month have been published.

For 2011, I'm hoping to have a theme for each month. Themes need to be open enough to allow a variety of questions. Previous themes include "Multiple Choice" "Either/Or" "20th Century" "Pictures" and "People". If you have a suggestion for a suitable theme, let me know.

Honesty Quiz - January 2011 - Multiple Choice.

No research is allowed after seeing the questions. They must be answered solely with the information currently in your head. No internet, books or consulting other people...or 'accidentally' seeing information.
One point per correct answer with no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions. If you don't know an answer, it's worth guessing. I will accept ONLY your first answer list (send to me via PM). Spelling accuracy is not required for person names. You may freely use pen, paper and simple (non-programmable) calculators.

No entry = no points.

Even if you might not know many answers, it's always worth guessing and there is no point to not making an entry even if you were to score zero.

Answers provided when entries close. I shall warn players a few days before I provide answers.

This month the theme is multiple choice. For each question there are 5 possible answers. All I need is an A,B,C,D or E as your answer for each question. Possible answers are listed in alphabetical order and I've made no consideration to evenly spread out the answers amongst A-E.

Read the questions carefully! However, there are no 'trick' questions...not this month anyway.

Last call for entries. Answers will appear by Friday.

After some thought, I've decided not to continue the quiz for the time being. Unfortunately I seem to be fairly busy and can't currently spare the time to hunt down quiz questions.

However, I may regain the appetite to run a one-off quiz every so often. Sorry if anyone is disappointed...

Honesty Quiz Answers - January 2011 - Multiple Choice.

14 entries with a wide range of scores. Numbers in brackets indicate correct answers.

1. The chemical formula for Ethylene is
A: C2H2
B: C2H4
C: C2H6
D: CH3COCH3
E: CH3OH

B: C2H4 is Ethylene (8). One contestant claimed a Chemical Engineering degree (but got the wrong answer)! They then claimed a completely different degree but I shall honour their anonymity.

2. Which of the following countries does NOT share a land border with Libya?
A: Algeria
B: Chad
C: Egypt
D: Nigeria
E: Sudan

D: Nigeria (8). Niger and Chad are between Nigeria and Libya

3. Which of the following films did NOT feature the actress Marilyn Monroe?
A: All About Eve
B: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
C: Pal Joey
D: The Misfits
E: The Prince and the Showgirl

C: Pal Joey (8) Starred Rita Hayworth. Marilyn was in all the other films.

4. Which filmstar appeared in the 2000 music video "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim?
A: Cameron Diaz
B: Christopher Walken
C: John Travolta
D: Julia Roberts
E: Nicholas Cage

B: Christopher Walken (6).
Walken initially trained as a dancer in music theatre. In this video, he dances and flies around the lobby of the Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles; Walken also helped choreograph the dance.

5. Which of the following is NOT a moon of Jupiter?
A: Callisto
B: Europa
C: Ganymede
D: Io
E: Triton

E: Triton (12) is the largest moon of Neptune.

6. How many keys are on a standard modern piano?
A: 84
B: 85
C: 88
D: 90
E: 94

C: 88 (9). 52 white keys, 36 black keys

7. A regulation basketball for men is 29.5 inches in circumference (a size 7 or a "295" ball). What is it's weight in ounces? (note, 16 ounces = 1 pound = 453 grams)
A: 16
B: 18
C: 20
D: 22
E: 24

D: 22 (5). A tricky question that was mostly down to guessing. Regarding the 'regulation' this is for international games so avoided any localised differences. I was also told off for equating ounces (gravity) with grams (mass), although had I not included a conversion rate I would have been told off anyway... (it was a reasonable comment)

8. The Polish flag is two horizontal stripes of equal width and length. What are the two colours (top/bottom)
A: Blue/White
B: Red/White
C: White/Black
D: White/Green
E: White/Red

E: White/Red (8)

9. A standard board for playing "GO" has a grid of painted lines. What is the size of the grid area?
A: 17 * 17
B: 17 * 21
C: 19 * 19
D: 19 * 23
E: 21 * 21

C: 19 * 19 (12)

10. In morse code, what symbol is represented by . - - - ? (dot dash dash dash)
A: 1 (one)
B: B
C: J
D: P
E: Q

C: J (6) Just one player went for '1' with lots of guesses for 'P' and 'Q'

Scores
9 Scurra
8 Zag, Internet Stranger, jesternl
7 Puzzlescot, Termital
6 Trojan Horse, referee, Groza528
5 Jaguar
4 Dragon Phoenix, Amb
3 Wordcross
2 Fezzik

Once again, Scurra led the way but there was quite a spread of scores.

Regrettably I find myself with a serious lack of time, such that I cannot continue hosting the quiz for the time being. It may well reappear later this year. Apologies for the start-stop situation.

Very sorry to hear that. Of course these things do take up a lot of time (which is why I decided never to try and run anything similar) and I - and everyone else - appreciate the time you have put in to date.
Hopefully the quiz will return.

(p.s. a couple of lucky guesses for me this month.)

Sorry to hear that you won't be able to keep it going. I hope it is nothing bad happening for you.

BTW, any GL members who got #5 wrong are immediately assigned 5 hours per week studying the Greek and Roman mythology for the next 3 months.

No, nothing wrong...no family emergencies or anything. It's just been a busy month and it's hard to find the time to organise everything. With luck I should get the urge to contine the quiz but I need a month or two as a break.

(I'll try and think up some Greek/Roman mythology questions in the meantime!)

I don't know. If only 3iff had been considerate enough to say something about February's quiz in this thread...
