19 3 - 17 3 = 1946

If you take a 19×19×19 cubical pile of little cubes and you hollow it out by removing its 17×17×17 interior leaving only the surface, edge, and corner cubes you end up with hollow cube made of 1946 little cubes. So 1946 must be a lucky year, right?

Happy Birthday!

(That's Pablo's age, in factorial, in base 62.)

Thanks, all!

May you all be as healthy and happy as I now am when you reach 65. I cranked out 1,000 calories in one hour on the stationary bike today, finished the NY Times xword puzzle, took no medications, and will go back to work tomorrow energized after the holiday and looking forward to another exciting year with the company. Maybe I don't exactly still have ALL my hair, but most of what I have is not gray.....and I DO have all my teeth....except for 3 wisdom teeth.

And here I am celebrating the occasion with my lovely wife at our favorite Thai restaurant. (Yes, she's considerably younger than I)

I hope you didn't spend too much time on that. Laughing

Happy birthday, sir. Although I've disagreed with your opinions sometimes, you've inspired me to be a more introspective, more rational, better-informed person. I'll re-pay you in fermented mare-milk the next time you're in town. I hope you like fermented mare-milk.

Holy crap! I've always thought you were about the most rational and well informed person I "know". I never dreamed I was responsible for it. Extreme Delectation

and BONUS! That means you've agreed with them MUCH of the time. This is the best birthday EVER!
Meant in a playful vein, not a snide one!

Revenge most foul!

By the way, question about piping: Some of my students have figured out a way to use the temperature difference between the ground (-40) and the bottoms of deep lakes (marginally above freezing) to generate energy during the winter-time in the far north. Their system is to use butane (at near air pressure) in a loop of pipes -- the gas would evaporate from the lake bottom, condense at the surface, and drive a sort of steam generator. Would PVC work for this?

Sounds like a heat pipe.

PVC is compatible with butane. It might be harder to work with though. If you are looking at rigid piping with small diameters, PVC probably isn't the best choice.

I'm not sure what pressures and temperatures are involved in this, but generally speaking PVC is (cold) water pipe. For most other applications, there are better options. For example, there is a growing geothermal market which uses polyethylene pipe. Here is a link to a company that makes it:
