We may have a large influx of new blood soon. I decided to run several around-the-campfire in person Mafia games over the long weekend, and they were very well received by my friends. I've encouraged several of them to sign up and begin posting here, in the hopes of increasing our numbers of active players. After I've had a shower and a nap, I'll catch up on threads and maybe even post some of the highlights from the games.

Clearly the way to sign up for a non existent game is by not saying "slash eye enn"

I'm not sure how this is supposed to be done, since I've only heard about playing in person second-hand.
I started by creating a list of roles, then asked for people who wanted to play, then balanced the roles. I stepped outside the play area and had the people come to me one at a time, and gave them their roles. Then we all sat around in a circle.
At this point in the game everyone knew their own roles, but they usually did not know who the others of their "group" were, in the case of Masons or Mafia. Everyone would start watching each other, make votes by pointing fingers, and discuss why they thought others were scum. Night came after a majority was reached and that person was killed, and I revealed their role.
After the first person was killed and we shifted to night phase, everyone dropped their heads and closed their eyes, and I would call out groups to raise their heads, communicate silently, and point to their targets. It was fun to hear the reactions when I called out things like "Roleblocker" or "Serial Killer", or even "Secret". I did try it by group number in one game to keep people guessing, and I would frequently call out roles or groups that didn't exist to keep everyone on their toes.

We spent most of Sunday running back-to-back Mafia games. In one game with around 15 people playing, the Serial Killer won the game. The player had been killed very quickly in her first game for stating that she liked the character Jar Jar Binks, then turned out to be town. In her second game she drew Serial Killer, and played very cautiously as people were being killed off by the mafia and the vigilante as well. It came down to 1 townie, 1 mafia, and the SK, and the townie chose wrong. Go SK!

In most of the games we ran, the Serial Killer was far less effective at killing off townies than the vigilante.

I think I'm going to make index cards of roles, and have people draw at random to see what they become. That will make my life much easier.

I was taught to have everyone sit in a circle and I would tap on everyone's back as I walked by indicating what role they were.
1 tap for Mafia
2 taps for Town
etc...

of course, they still need to have their eyes closed and I would spend the same amount of time with each person so no one could guess what role someone else was based on time spend tapping on their back.

Hope that makes sense.

In person mafia is a LOT of fun.

The games I ran while camping varied from about 10-17 people. After I find my notes I MUST post about the completely unbalanced mafia game. It was hilarious!

We use a deck of cards. Aces are mafia, Kings are cops, Queens are doctors, etc. Just as long as everybody knows the system, you are fine. You set aside the cards you are going to use then let them choose at random. Other than that, everything is the same as you. I would often call out unused roles.

I first played mafia in person not online and we used cards as well jacks as mafia, queens as docs, kings as sheriff and we always knew the setup usually 2-3 mafia and 1 doc 1 sheriff. In person is really fun with a large group

I was surprised how different it was in person. After all you can't go back and quote anything directly, but I do get to look in their eyes. It seemed like there was more lurking too, but we had a great time!

Groza ran a real life game when he visited me in New Zealand. I won as mafia! I had everyone completely convinced I was town: Even the guys from mafiascum! Sweetness.

When you are playing in a live game, how do you handle night time. Do the mafia have a chance to get together and talk? Doesn't that make it kind of obvious?

yep its hilarious when you are running them because some times the silent arguments nearly crack me up.

What I found funny was when people forgot themselves and said something during the night phase. Even more so when the other players missed it completely.

I do have to say I loved Ben's reaction when I was the role blocker. =)
But being a mason when you don't know who your fellow masons are is hard.
