Ok. I'm ready with this game, even though it isn't likely to happen for quite a while. It's going to need 14 players (or more), so I'm going to post the sign-ups early. I hope all the new people are enjoying playing, because I'm going to need you. Extreme Delectation

As with all my games (at least, so far), there are no vanilla roles. Everyone has at least a little something, and there are several original (pretty wacky, actually) roles, as well as a few traditional roles. Seriously, mafia, remember this, and don't claim vanilla.

The theme is secret. Frankly, I'll be amazed if anyone guesses it. But if anyone does (that is, the first person who does), he will have a day and night of immunity from kills of any sort.

I so guarantee. There are exactly zero jesters in this game.

I'm not sure whether or not this will encourage people to sign up, but I have a new process for this one which greatly reduces a frustration I've had with all the games here. My frustration is with the games that start on day, we do a (typically very long) first day with really nothing to go on. I find it rather frustrating, frankly.

On the other hand, traditional mafia games start at night, including a night kill, and one person is knocked out of the game before he even gets to do anything. I also find this unacceptable.

My new policy:
1. I will include a fictitious player named Fred in addition to all the actual players.
2. All the roles will be assigned randomly, including giving Fred a chance of receiving any role.
3. Town players who get to know each other (i.e. masons, etc.) will not be informed, yet, of their comrades.
4. Game will start at night, and the mafia can choose any player they like, to kill. Other players with a night action will declare them. (If anyone has a vigilante, serial killer, or any other night-kill ability other than the mafia's, he will not be allowed to use it the first night.)
5. The player killed will be informed of his death, and will immediately take over as a replacement for Fred, who drops out. If Fred has a night action, he'll get to do it right away.
6. Town players who know others will now be informed of their comrades and, if they are allowed night-time discussions, will be given a day or two to have them.

This gives the mafia a fair chance of eliminating a power role, since they can pick anyone they want. (All roles have some ability, but some are more powerful than others.)

In the event that the mafia is prevented from killing on the first night, then the townie players with comrades will not be informed who they are until the second night, after that killing. While this is a small detriment to the town, it is made up for by the fact that they escaped a night kill the first night.

If Fred's night ability is something that might have prevented the kill, oh well. (Time paradoxes are automatically prevented by the time machine, because the temporal field will not be able to stabilize. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.)

So come on! The game will be great! Sign up!!

Hello, I would like to /in for this game, although I am very new to these forums I have a little forum mafia experience, and people that I've met through mafia hold this site in very high esteem, so I thought I would come and see how you guys play mafia.

I've never played a game with a hidden theme before but it looks interesting to me, I voted that it would make me more interested, as it is very unique and is something that sparks my interest. If they were extremely common however I doubt that they'd be as interesting, although I've never played a unknown-themed game before so I suppose I can't say so yet.

Your "Fred" idea is a very very good one. I have also pondered if there was a way to make forum mafia games start at night, whilst not punishing someone early with a night kill. It would suck to have to wait all that time to play and then to simply die at gamestart. I haven't thought of your idea, although it seems like the obvious solution, it is unheard of as far as I know. I think that it should definitely be considered greatly, however one inquiry that I do have is whether or not town is alerted of who is killed at night. Will we just know that "Fred" died? Or will we know that Player A has died and taken the role of "Fred"? I would prefer the latter as it provides some more information, especially given what other powerroles that later claim may say whom they visited. And it could very well conflict with that of other information in combination of the details of who really was targeted. I also assume that you would re-do the RNG to determine roles if Fred was scum, correct?

/in for this game sparks my interest. If however, players who are brand new to the site are not allowed to partake in mafia games, then I will respect your rules. This site has many interesting puzzles and I am enjoying myself attempting to solve them without the use of your solutions. I have noticed however from the thread that attempts to solve new puzzles that I am not of their caliber, so I expect to struggle a lot more than them.

What is the mafia's motivation in targeting anyone but Fred? He has the same chance of being a power role, and it's impossible for them to choose who to eliminate. All they do by picking someone else is giving free information to the town.
Which begs the next question, can a doc-type protect Fred?

Deception, you're more than welcome to join. We are always glad to bring new people to GL. Welcome! Note, however, that we have a pretty small population of players, so we only have one game going at a time. My game isn't next, so it might be a while before it starts.

Yes, I plan to announce who was killed, and that he is now replacing Fred.

Antrax, there are a number of possible reasons. Fred might be a mafia, or they might fear that he would be protected, etc. He should just be considered another player who didn't show up for the game.

Sorry, misread that. If Fred makes it through the night (nobody dies), can you lynch Fred?

One potential flaw: Suppose Fred starts out as a member of the mafia. Then the mafia effectively have the ability to pick one member, either grabbing somebody who's very sneaky as scum, or depriving the town of a good scumhunter.

If Fred doesn't start in the mafia:
- Night kills are chosen to either remove a role from the game, or to remove a player from the game. Night 1, the mafia is blind as far as roles go, and they can't remove an opposing player from the game. You might as well pick a random town role and declare that role killed night 1 before assigning characters.

It's all about the illusion of choice. Extreme Delectation

Or maybe they're psychic.

Or maybe one of the scum has some amount of investigative property.

Or maybe that first thing.

Anyway, I had considered the opportunity for recruiting, if Fred was scum. I'm willing to live with it.

What does a double standard have to include in order to be a weird one? Enthusiastic Grin

Sure, everybody's welcome. However, partly because of the influx of new people, and partly because of the long delay between sign-ups and game, before I send out role PMs I'll be sending out confirmation PMs. I just want to make sure everybody is still interested.

Hmmm. Now I have to go make another role. I suppose we do need a serial killer, after all. Extreme Delectation
