Wandering through Wikipedia, I came across an article on Textual Criticism. Basically, someone has 5 distinct copies of text, none of which are original, and then tries to figure out what the original text actually said.

It made me think of that old game telephone, or Chinese whispers, or whatever you want to call it. Its obvious how a whispered verbal message can be corrupted, but I'm now curious how a text-based message would be corrupted (aside from translation programs).

So, Rules:

1. Sign up
2. I'll list you all in order
3. You will receive a message from the person above you
4. You will re-type that message and send it to the person below you. If you are the last person on the list, you will post the message here.
5. You can only read the message you receive once before re-typing and sending it
6. You cannot copy-and-paste the message
7. Don't actively try to change the message, but also don't fret over not getting it quite right -- that's the point Felicitous

Who's willing to entertain me?

Players:
  1. Courk
  2. wordcross
  3. bgg1996
  4. MatthewV
  5. Antrax
  6. Amb
  7. Zag
  8. MNOWAX

  10. Sentran
  11. Chuck
  12. groza528
  13. Silverfire
  14. ralphmerridew
  15. Undercover Monk
Please PM me the message you are sending as well so I can post all of them later, and also keep track of who currently has received messages. Felicitous

I'll play.

At the end, could we all see who distorted the message the most?

I'll play, but I've been typing what's in front of my face since 1977. I might get my copy right.

If this doesn't work, another experiment might be to allow copy and paste but each player must change exactly one word in the text to another word while changing the meaning at little as possible.

Eh what the heck, I'll give it a shot.
Is the message for this game going to be original? If not, and we recognize it, is it cheating to correct errors made by people before us?

Perhaps the idea is to read the whole message, then stop looking at it and try to remember what was said. Anyway, this sounds like fun. /in

What Silverfire said. Read the message, then after reading it, retype what it says without looking at it.

It will be an original message.

You should make the original message a bunch of innocuous but slightly suggestive made-up gossip about GL'ers. Enthusiastic Grin

I think this would be a lot more interesting if it was done in the style of Telestrations. (Or "Eat poop you cat" as it's known on BGG).

Basically you alternate words and pictures. One person is given a word or phrase and they draw a picture of it. The next person looks at the picture and tries to guess what the word was. The next person draws a picture that guess, and so on. Then you see how far away the guess is from the first word.
