If the recent games of Quoridor® have taught me anything, it's that GLers love four-player abstract strategy games! So let's try one! If you're familiar with Othello® (who isn't?), then Rolit® should be easy to learn.
The board starts like this:
| Code: |
ABCDEFGH
1 ........ 1
2 ........ 2
3 ........ 3
4 ...RY... 4
5 ...BG... 5
6 ........ 6
7 ........ 7
8 ........ 8
ABCDEFGH |
The four central holes in the grid contain balls, each of which has a red, a yellow, a green, and a blue side. At the start, each ball has a different color facing up, but over the course of the game, this can change multiple times.
After all players have selected their colors, a random player will be selected to go first, and then play will continue clockwise (in the order Red, Yellow, Green, Blue). On your turn, you simply place one ball of your color on the grid. If possible, you must make a capturing move by placing your ball such that at least one horizontal, vertical, or diagonal string of enemy balls (uninterrupted by empty spaces or your balls) is flanked on one side by the ball you placed and on the other side by one of your balls which is already on the board. All such enemy balls in all such strings are then converted to your color. For example, from the starting position, Red can play D6 (capturing Blue), F4 (capturing Yellow), or F6 (capturing Green). Here is what the board appears like after F4:
| Code: |
ABCDEFGH
1 ........ 1
2 ........ 2
3 ........ 3
4 ...RRR.. 4
5 ...BG... 5
6 ........ 6
7 ........ 7
8 ........ 8
ABCDEFGH |
If you can't make a capturing move, you may play anywhere on the board that is horizontally, vertically, or diagonally adjacent to another ball. (This differs from Othello®, in which a player who can't make a capturing move must pass.) In the above position, Yellow has 14 moves available to him; he can't capture because he doesn't have any balls on the board with which to flank enemy balls. For the purposes of this example, assume Yellow plays C5:
| Code: |
ABCDEFGH
1 ........ 1
2 ........ 2
3 ........ 3
4 ...RRR.. 4
5 ..YBG... 5
6 ........ 6
7 ........ 7
8 ........ 8
ABCDEFGH |
It is Green's turn next. Green has four capturing moves available: C3, E3, and G3 each capture a single Red ball, while B2 captures Yellow and Blue. Green can choose any of these four moves; you must always make a capturing move if one is available, but you are never under obligation to make the capturing move which takes the most pieces.
When the board is full, whoever has the most pieces showing wins!
I'm /in, but I'll let the other players choose their colors first. (I'm /in-decisive, haha.)

I used to have a DOS game that allowed you to play up to 9 computer opponents, and I would give a lot to have that game back. I cant remember the name, but googling 10 player Othello or Reversi has never worked. My goal was to wipe players out until there was only 1 or 2 left.
The rules in that game: All captured "balls" must be the same color, ie placing a yellow on the _ in this sequence _BBBY captured all the blue. But _ B G B Y wouldnt work.
If a player couldnt move they had to pass.
Btw: This means in IN.
I'd be happy to play the color that plays last.
Under normal rules a player who is wiped out is out of the game. But the custom rule in this game of being allowed to play any move means that isnt the case right? |

While Black always plays first in Othello®, the official Rolit® rules say you roll one of the pieces like a die to determine who goes first. As such, the player who goes last is similarly random. Choose a color, and then if luck is on your side, you'll get to go last.

Right. The first player's first move will necessarily capture a player's only piece, so it would hardly be a fair game if that player never got to play. And if you're worried that the other players might gang up on a single player to constantly reduce him from 1 piece to 0, remember this: a player who can't make a capturing move has more freedom than a player who must make a capturing move, and while I'm no Othello® expert, I understand that mobility is more important than having many pieces early on. . . . _________________ My logic puzzle blog |

Um, is there any chance I could persuade you to take G2, Amb, so we can both have corners on the following turn? Or will you do what any sane Othello® player would do and take A8 immediately, leaving me out in the cold? _________________ My logic puzzle blog |

Barring certain moves by Red and Yellow, you'll be forced to take G2, but I will be forced to make a capturing move before you can do that, leaving me with pieces your move of G2 didn't capture, leaving me with more capturing moves which preclude me from taking any cell I want willy-nilly. If there is a way for me to force a corner, it's going to involve a little bit of strategery. Corners are overrated, anyway. _________________ My logic puzzle blog |

You know, the next time we play this game we might use a larger board. With this one we're each only getting 16 moves as opposed to the 2 player version where there are (theoretically) 32 moves apiece. It would keep the corners free longer and really give the center an interesting tapestry.

wordcross: the official Rolit® board is 8x8 (except in a travel edition which is 6x6). We might have to try a 10x10 board, though.
