NFL Wipeout
Rules:
This game is played in 17 weekly rounds, one round for each week of the regular National Football League season. In each round, before any NFL games for that week have started, each players sends the game moderator (me) a selection of one or more teams that are scheduled to play that week. After the final game for that week is over, each player receives a score equal to the sum of scores of the teams he selected. However, each player who selected that week's lowest scoring team gets zero instead. If more than one team ties for low score then selecting any of them earns zero points. Teams that don't play in a week aren't counted as scoring zero. There is no penalty for selecting such a team.
Example, if the scores are:A player choosing the Steelers, Raiders, and Colts would get the sum of their scores, 50 points. A player choosing the Browns and the Jets would get 70 points. A player choosing the Raiders, Jets, Colts, and Ravens would get no points because the Ravens had the lowest score.
After the last game of each week the players' choices for that week, points earned, and total scores so far will be posted in the game thread.
Players who miss the deadline for sending selections will use their previous week's selections. They might get no points for it but it's better than getting a certain zero by not having a selection at all. A player can also send a default list of teams to be used if deadlines are missed. A default list can be changed as often as the player likes.
Players can start late but will get no points for the weeks they miss.
The player with the highest total score after the 17th week has been played and scored is the winner.
Strategy:
Obviously, if you select all of the teams you'll get no points. Choosing many teams will probably get you zero but could get you a lot of points if you're lucky or knowledgeable. If you're behind in the end game that might be a good strategy. Choosing few teams will probably get you some points but could get you none if you're unlucky. If you're ahead in the end game you might want to do this to avoid taking a zero. Knowing the teams could help. You might want to avoid teams that have been scoring poorly and teams that are playing against strong defensive teams that week.
Here are the deadlines for each week's selections:- Thursday, September 8 at 8:30 PM EDT
- Sunday, September 18 at 1:00 PM EDT
- Sunday, September 25 at 1:00 PM EDT
- Sunday, October 2 at 1:00 PM EDT
- Sunday, October 9 at 1:00 PM EDT
- Sunday, October 16 at 1:00 PM EDT
- Sunday, October 23 at 1:00 PM EDT
- Sunday, October 30 at 1:00 PM EDT
- Sunday, November 6 at 1:00 PM EST
- Thursday, November 10 at 8:20 PM EST
- Thursday, November 17 at 8:20 PM EST
- Thursday, November 24 at 12:30 PM EST
- Thursday, December 1 at 8:20 PM EST
- Thursday, December 8 at 8:20 PM EST
- Thursday, December 15 at 8:20 PM EST
- Thursday, December 22 at 8:20 PM EST
- Sunday, January 1 at 1:00 PM EST
Complete schedule for the NFL 2011 season.
Selections can be sent by private message or by email. If you use email be sure to include your Grey Labyrinth screen name in your message. You can list the teams by team name or location name except New York in which case you have to say whether it's the Jets or the Giants. One team per line would be nice.
There is no signup deadline. I recommend signing up before the first week of the season. |

| There are now eight players in the game. That's one more than last year. There are still nine hours left until the season begins. |

OMG! What a stupid last play. They couldn't jam one through before, what makes them think they can do it now? But a pretty exciting finish!
Saints are the current wipeout team at only 34 points. I bet it doesn't hold up. |

| The Seahawks now have 7 points so that might hold up as low score. The Cowboys, Jets, Patriots, Dolphins, Raiders, and Broncos have yet to play. |

| The Patriots lead The Dolphins 14 to 7 in the second quarter. That leaves The Raiders and The Broncos to possibly lower the wipeout score. |

| Assuming they don't, then possibly it makes sense, rather than giving everyone a score of zero, you might let everyone cross out one 7-point team. That way, only people who chose two of them would wipe out. (said the guy who only has one of the three team.) |

| I don't like making rule changes after a game has started. Some will benefit more than others and not like it. If ties for low score keep coming up then players will probably start sending shorter lists. |
