Quiz Olympiad.
A quiz knockout game. Using the Honesty quiz rules...no research permitted, with players on their honour to abide by this rule. Answers are PM'ed to me. There must be no discussion of questions in the forum until the round is closed. Any queries, PM to me please.
The 10 questions of each round will be on different subjects. To eliminate problems with accuracy of player answers, all questions will be multiple choice with 4 or 5 options. All a player needs to do is choose one answer option for each question. Answer options will be in a form of alphabetic order so it's possible to have all A's or even all E's for answers but don't expect an even spread of answers.
Players will need to sign up in advance and then will participate in rounds of 10 questions. The lowest scoring player of each round is eliminated as are any other players with the same score. If only one player is eliminated from this, then the next lowest score might also be used to eliminate players...unfortunately this will have to be at my discretion.
The Cut: Any player scoring 3 or less in a round is almost certain to be eliminated.
I will aim for the game to go around 5-6 rounds so expect around 20% of the original number of contestants to be eliminated each round.
The deadline for a round will be approximately a week. I suspect the game will flow quicker than that. Current players failing to submit answers by the deadline will be eliminated. Players may request to extend the deadline in emergencies.
As the game progresses, expect more difficult questions. When we are down to 3 or 4 players then we have a final round where high score wins the game.
(Specialist subject option deleted and no longer applies.)
Each round will probably take a week to play (and give time for me to think of questions). I may also accept questions from non-participating players. (Anyone wanting to do this should provide the question and 5 options for answers, then PM the info to me. Make sure you double-check your question and answers. Remember also that contestants are generally evenly split between British and American with a sprinkling of Europeans and others. Don't make questions too specific regarding country/culture.)
Scores in previous rounds are irrelevant. You just need enough right answers in a round to get you into the next round.
Any modifications required to these rules?
Ok, anyone want to participate? You need to sign up, either here or via PM.

I'm in but I don't understand the specialist thing. It just seems a little messy, and create repetitive questions each round. _________________ I'll have a P please... |

Specialist subject...someone might be good at/enjoy film related questions so would like one each round.
At least that gives me a focus on what questions to set. One player just suggested a fairly esoteric (for me) subject and I doubt I would know enough about that subject to set any meaningful questions. Fortunately, alternatives were offered.
However, players might not want to nominate a subject and that's ok. |

I'll play, I *have* been meaning to attempt a GL comeback for a while, and whilst I was lurking in various threads I decided this'd be ideal
My subject of choice is Japanese kanji. If this isn't specific enough to make questions from (and I'm going to assume that's the case), then maybe the meaning/translation in English of just the JLPT level N4 kanji, there's only about 200 or so . _________________ Guess who's back, back again, Kd's back, tell a friend. |

I think your specialist subject is going to be way outside the scope of this game. See earlier editions of the Honesty quiz for an idea of how I do the game.
MNOWAX
I'll have a go at the professional wrestling questions but they are also bordering on the edge of limitation. I'm tempted to include pantomime questions too...
This specialist subject idea is becoming nightmareish. lexprod, you were right. |

So...any question on (what I'm assuming encompasses the entire history of) professional wrestling or American football might be ok, but asking people to match a symbol to a meaning isn't... ? _________________ Guess who's back, back again, Kd's back, tell a friend. |

Yeah, it's in everyone's best interest to leverage as close to their niche as possible, and having it in EVERY ROUND throws off the whole pace of things. Maybe if you still want the aspect you could make it so once the field is down to say 5 or 6, you'll do a custom 10th question for each player. However that does mean more writing on your part _________________ I'll have a P please... |

Right, we have 14 signed up and newcomers can join provided they participate in the first round so I'll sort out some questions and get them published for Friday.
A round will last about a week and it's likely that 2-3 players will be eliminated each round. That should give about 6-7 rounds in all. |

Olympiad Round 1
Honesty quiz rules apply...no research permitted, with players on their honour to abide by this rule.
Answer options will generally be in alphabetical order so it's possible to have all A's or all D's for answers.
Any questions deemed invalid due to confusing wording or incorrect answer options will be excluded from the round.
Round 1 offers questions with 4 options. Later rounds may offer 5 options (making things tougher). The lowest scorers of each round will be eliminated (2-3 players per round).

I guess if I had to break it down:
3 answers I was totally sure of (2, 9, 10)
2 answers I was almost totally sure of (1, 4)
3 answers where I had that "sort of rings a bell" feeling, but no confidence (3, 5, 8)
2 answers where I might as well have been pulling out of a hat (6, 7) _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |

4 Kd, Chuck, Carrier_of_the_arch

Therefore, the players eliminated are Kd, Chuck, Carrier_of_the_arch and sAbLLimINal. I'm aiming to eliminate the lowest 3 players per round which sometimes might be more if players share a score, as in this case.
Remember that what is important is your score relative to other players. You do not need to get the top score...but it helps.
Round 2 is imminent.
