| Or you could have specified it was Pablo making the play. Although in that case, it would have actually been a trick question. |

| 9. In Scrabble (English language tile set), if you were to play 6 tiles on an otherwise empty board to make the word PUZZLE on six non-bonus tiles, how many points would this score? |
So... what is the longest word you can make without hitting a bonus square if you could play anywhere on an open board?
A) 2
B) 3
C) 4
D) 5 |

oh
Actually I never considered that possibility. One way 'around' that is to have the blank z on a double/triple letter square (still scoring 0) or alternatively I could cancel the question...but that wouldn't really change the outcome...just reducing Sentran to joint second.
However, as the play isn't possible within a game anyway because the first word should cross the centre double word bonus tile I think it's reasonable to allow the question as I specify 'no bonus squares' even though this isn't physically possible on a regular scrabble board.
And perhaps one slightly dodgy question out of 60 isn't bad going. I'll try to be more careful next time. |

I thought your question was clearly specified. I just thought my question was a good pointless trivia question |

Ahh...I thought you were complaining about my question...but a perfectly valid comment. I prefer that my questions are mainly watertight, have one valid answer and no loopholes.
It's been a while since I looked at a scrabble board. I probably would have got that right but perhaps I had a sneaking suspicion that there was a line with no bonus squares at all.
A lot of my questions are along those lines...something that perhaps the player should know... |

Yeah, I wasn't trying to make the result suspect (after all, I did so badly in this last round that it wouldn't matter for me), just mentioning a small back-door I've noticed so that more care is taken next time. This was a greatly presented quiz, and quite interesting. Thanks for putting that out.

It's these backdoors I try to avoid. The odd one may slip through but fortunately no damage was done this time. Sometimes formulating questions is hard as I have a particular way of seeing what I'm asking while another person sees it from a different angle... |

[56? An 8 letter word made up of 2 blanks and 6 1-point tiles, with no new non-blank tiles on bonus squares, and no connections] |

A "bingo" is a word using all of your tiles, thus netting the bonus 50 points. Obviously it will usually be longer than seven letters since it has to link to something on the board. _________________

Ah...didn't know that. So I don't know everything after all
I never seemed to have the opportunity to play all 7 tiles in a go as they were either all vowels or no vowels.
Have to agree with the number from Duke Gnome. |

Correct. An alternative is a seven letters word with two blanks, using one of the blanks as the connection to make a two-letter word, with all the letters involved being one point, yielding the same answer. A seven letter word that doesn't connect must be the first play, and thus get a word bonus that raises the score to 60. _________________ Jan 21st, 2008: The pillaging continues.
