For figuring out the theme, generally only the role names are significant. There are a couple for which the role itself helps to clarify the role name, but for most it is safely ignored.

The rules:
* Don't quote from your role message in the public forum, but you may in the night-time discussion forums if you like.
* Don't edit any posts!
* All discussion of the game must be in this forum, the designated night-time discussion forums, or PMs to me. Nothing outside those.
* Votes must be in bold, and have the form Vote: Chaz (whether or not Chaz is playing!) Adding that you are unvoting (and from whom) is a convenience to me but not required.
* Roles will be assigned randomly. (Just to clarify, since a recent mod intentionally assigned roles to cause maximum mayhem. It was pretty funny, if a little annoying, but I won't be doing that.)
* Don't be more of a jerk than absolutely necessary.
* Don't take anything personally (outside the game, that is), if someone is being a jerk inside the game. It might be part of his role, after all.
* I may announce deadlines to get action going. These will be extended if it works.
* If I announce a "hard deadline" then it will not be extended.
* Day will end when I make an official announcement that the day is over, after a majority has been reached. Discussion may continue after the majority is reached but before I have announced the end of day. However, any votes or unvotes made after the majority is reached will be ignored, unless I specifically post that day continues. (If that happens, then any vote changes between majority being reached and when I post that day continues will be ignored.)
* If day ends due to a deadline, it will not actually end until I announce it. Feel free to keep discussing and voting.
* At a deadline, whoever has the most votes will be lynched. If two tie, then whoever has had that number (or more) for longer will be lynched. However, it requires a minimum of 2 votes to lynch someone; if no one has more than one vote at the deadline, the result will be "no lynch."
* "No Lynch" is a valid vote. If that reaches a majority (or wins a tie-breaker as above) then there will be no lynch. Note that this is different from simply not voting, it must be an active vote.


My new policy:
1. I will include a fictitious player named Fred in addition to all the actual players.
2. All the roles will be assigned randomly, including giving Fred a chance of receiving any role.
3. Town players who get to know each other (i.e. masons, etc.) will not be informed, yet, of their comrades.
4. The game will start at night, and the mafia can choose any player they like, to kill. Other players with a night action will declare them. (If anyone has a vigilante, serial killer, or any other night-kill ability other than the mafia's, he will not be allowed to use it the first night.)
5. The player killed will be informed of his death, and will immediately take over as a replacement for Fred, who drops out. If Fred has a night action, he'll get to do it right away.
6. Town players who know others will now be informed of their comrades and, if they are allowed night-time discussions, will be given a day or two to have them.

This gives the mafia a fair chance of eliminating a power role, since they can pick anyone they want. (All roles have some ability, but some are more powerful than others.)

In the event that the mafia is prevented from killing on the first night, then the townie players with comrades will not be informed who they are until the second night, after that killing. While this is a small detriment to the town, it is made up for by the fact that they escaped a night kill the first night.

If Fred's night ability is something that might have prevented the kill, oh well. (Time paradoxes are automatically prevented by the time machine, because the temporal field will not be able to stabilize. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.)

The Secret Theme
The names and roles all come from a secret theme. You are encouraged to use Google to try to figure it out, as I imagine it would be impossible without. It's probably impossible with Google's help. I won't be the least bit surprised if no one can figure it out, even after hearing all the roles (though there are a couple that are better hints than others). However, if anyone does figure it out, then that person should PM me with the guess. Each person gets only three guesses, and no more than one per day, so a shotgun approach will not work. The first person to PM me with the correct name of the theme will have lynch immunity for that day (if it is daytime) or the following day (if it is night).

If someone guesses it, I will announce that it has been guessed, but not the correct answer. I will only inform who made the correct guess if necessary to prevent a lynching. (Of course, I will inform the person who guessed correctly that he is right.) People are welcome to continue to guess, and I will inform you if you have guessed correctly. (This might be valuable to you in evaluating role claims, for instance.)

Terminology

I use these terms interchangeably, and I don't want anyone to think I mean different things, so, for the record, these terms all mean the same thing: innocent, townie, member of town
And these all mean the same: guilty, evil, mafia, scum
The term anti-town (or non-town) however, does not necessarily mean mafia; it could mean a serial killer or any other role that is neither town nor mafia.

As for your terminology, it's good to put that up front.

(I view "townie" as a pro-town role with no extra abilities; the other words are all any pro-town character; cops, docs, vigs are all "town", "innocent", "good", but not "townie".
Similarly, "mafia" is a particular anti-town faction; serial killers are anti-town but not "mafia")

I'm a complete novice on the game (at the moment)...but if you need another player then I'll have a go. No idea how much of a liability I might be. I promise to try not to muck things up...

I hope I have the balance right. I've never played a game this big, so there are unknowns. I know that as I was sending out the townie roles, I was thinking "OMG, the Mafia don't have a chance." Then, as I was sending out the Mafia roles, I was thinking "OMG, the town doesn't have a chance." So I think it's probably pretty balanced.

Hello everyone, this should be a fun session of mafia. I'm not a fan of RVS by any means so I'll start us off with some Random Questions.

1) How many times have you been scum in a mafia game?

2) How long have you been playing mafia?

3)In a world where you would never be critisized for being wrong (due to the fact that no one would know you're wrong) would you ever hesitant to voice every opinion you had? Would you lie more often than usual?

4) Why do you play mafia?

5) Do you prefer anticipation or reactions? As in, are you someone who anticipates the enemy's movements or are you one that reacts to his movements?

Also I would like to point out something interesting about that role. Things you KNOW as truth. It doesn't state anywhere that it has a buddy or anything, so really the only thing it knows as truth is its own alignment. However the PM implies there are more options than that. So I think that that PM implies Masons, Cults or perhaps neighborizors or some other role/ability that would give the truth-teller a piece of information privately.

I think Deception isn't trying to direct the game, but get a feel on the personality of the people (he?) is playing with since (he?) is relatively new to the site. Also to get reactions that (he?) may or may not consider townie or scum tells.

To Deception I have never played mafia online before and I don't keep track of offline games.
I have been playing mafia for about nine years.
If I was never blamed for being wrong I don't think I would not lie any more or less then usual.
I play mafia because it can be played in many different ways and no two games come out exactly the same.
And like Lucresia I try to examine things from as many angles as possible.

I assure you I am not directing this game by any means, rather I am just feeling the site out, I don't understand your style of play much yet but it doesn't seem too different. I read along with the last game played starting about half way through but noticed you did RVS..

Searching for reactions? Hmm... yes in a way you could say that. The answers help me scumhunt and could prove useful as soon as day 1 and as late as my last day alive.

I would like question 1 answered by everyone to their greatest extend pretty please. It does help. As to your questions on it Lucresia, No to the former and not necessarily to the latter.

I can already tell this is gonna be fun. As much as i have enjoed playing with MNO, Zag, Jedo and the rest of the usuals it is interesting seeing the differences in style of the newbs deception and perpentech

so a few comments:

On the night kill, BAD FORM. It is considerd bad form to make the first mafia kill of the game a newbie. I know he survived but it is customary to allow the newbs to get their feet wet so they dont leave the site after being in a game for 1 page then having to wait 4 months to get a second chance. We are trying to resurect the game here at GL so could we refrain from doing that again.

Deception all your post feel very robotic to me I don't know why. as to MNOWAX you should know he is given to randomn vote changes for no apparent reason and as such is not usually listened to during RVS. Just his play style.
