So the powers that be have restricted the internet settings at my office. I don't know what they've done, but the upshot is that, while I'm unable to get into most of the sites I used to enjoy wasting time on, I now have free and easy access to the GL. Good times!

Since it is customary, even for a lazy oaf like myself, to make the occasional token concession to work at various strategic points throughout the day, I've decided to start a thread devoted to nice and easy puzzles, so I and others like me (but mostly me, if I'm being honest) can dip into the thread whenever we get a free moment for a quick hit of puzzling enjoyment. The puzzles can be about anything at all, but they must be designed to be solved in 5 minutes or less. For those wondering why I didn't just use the 'Quickies' thread, I must confess that, for mediocre solvers like myself, the Quickies aren't, in actual fact, particiularly quick, and are thus unsuitable for my present purpose.

Anyway, enough faffing about. Here's my first, to kick off the thread. Simply work out the nine letter word below.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

9213599 - An emotion
23456 - An emotion
45356789 - Charitable

I don't think I can get this one -- it's too much of a risk. Besides, it might make me melancholy or really ticked off, or maybe even cause me to give away all my money.

STRAY

Assuming 1 can't just be "A" again (so ASTRAY for the top one), I have no clue what it can be.

Very good. Here's another one:

Tony likes taxis but not cabs. He likes love but not lust. He likes chicken but not lamb.

Does he like birds or cats?

Paladin did a similar sequence in one of the rounds of his (second?) competition. Except his list had a lot of infinities.

Which reminds me of a puzzle that I found somewhere.

A new taxicab service has started in my area...and it has an unforgettable phone number. What is it?

Ah, the pattern I saw was that Tony liked things with two vowels but not with one. Guess that was just coincidence then.

No idea on the folding one.

For my likes/dislikes puzzle, it might help to know that Julius also likes the same things Tony likes, and for the same reason.

Here's a 3x3

LIFE
BOAT
SUPER
FUN

I got the same answer as groza, and I have no idea how this hint helps. Perhaps if you could tell us the name of someone who uses the same criteria but doesn't like the same things, that might help?

Actually this allows 10 minutes (but I took 4:30 and scored 15/15), much to my relief.

This is aimed at 10/11 year olds so players here should not have a problem.

Answer spoilered
Take a strip of paper, say 10 units * 1 unit. Now fold the paper into a knot, pull the ends taut and fold the 2 flaps back. You now have a regular pentagon.

I've taken some song lyrics and reworded them.

1) “We did not initiate this conflagration! It has persisted since the world first commenced rotating on its axis”.

2) We expend the bulk of our time and energy residing in a utopia for hooligans and scallywags!

3) When two rapscallions, plotting nefarious activities, commenced a brou-haha in my district. It took only a single altercation before my mater, taking fright, expelled me to live with her brother.

What were the original songs and artists?

On a 4x4 board, place seven white rooks so that each rook commands a different number of unoccupied squares. (This of course means one of the rooks will 'command' a total of zero squares.)
There's three essentially different answers, but one will do.
