Y'know, I just realized something interesting. I know nothing about computers.

Anyway...so, my mom wants to add some RAM to her computer (she currently has 64MB SDRAM). What I want to know is, is it okay to have a total amount of RAM other than 64, 128, 256, etc.? I.e., does it have to be a power of 2, or can she go buy like 128MB for a total of 192MB?

::sighs:: Thanks all...one day I'm going to actually learn some useful things, really I am...

Once upon a time, my dad ran 192 MB RAM. He's got 512 now.

I don't think it causes problems, but lemme check real quck.

You may have any amount of RAM you want.

Beware, though, some computers have a maximum amount of RAM they can recognize. Though usually it's 1gb+, so no worries.

There are many different types/styles of RAM... Does she know which type of RAM to buy? Does she have a major-brand computer? If so, there's a quick way to find out: http://www.crucial.com

Actually I think the limit (which is created by the CPU) is upwards of 4gb (for the older processors) and the new ones I believe are 64gb or so. So don't let her buy too much...

Even with a sharp file, it's hard to fit more than a fistful of RAM chips into those two slots, macnut.

You should be fine at 192. If she plans on more, careful, I know that some video cards f'up when the computer has 512+.

How would the RAM affect the video card? Shared, with a card that can't recognize more than 512?

Well, if she started ith 64mb, she more than definitely has PC100 SDRAM, don't go to a retailer and buy it though, you'll pay through your nose, check out www.newegg.com or www.pricewatch.com

I'd recommended newegg, they never screwed up anything of mine

It's not necessarily PC100 SDRAM. Could easily be EDO.

Did you know you have to put the RAMs in a correct order? The card with more RAM goes first, then the next smallest, and so on. If they are the same then it doesn't matter. First time I did it I didn't know that, and after rebooting my computer it turned into a tranvestite.

Check the manual for the computer. It should say what the limitations on RAM are. The Compaqs in my office will only recognize up to 384MB, or one 128MB DIMM in each slot.

I think Merc's Boyfriend is right, it is PC100 SDRAM.

Thanks for the tip, Huey...hopefully her machine won't do the RuPaul thing.
