A quick question the " how hard can it be?" puzzle, how many people actually solved that one? I don't know too many people that have the entire library of top gear at their fingertips ( I mean, how many have one on here? ) (yes that was a thinly veiled brag)

I can stream it on Netflix, up to Series 17, that counts right?

Of puzzles in the William S. Bergman round (which had two unlock groups), the least solved was Good Neighbors (2 teams), followed by 25th Annual Putnam County Debate Tournament (4 teams) and How Hard Could It Be? (4 teams). The most solved was In Vivo (22 teams). 20 teams completed the task for Coming to a Location Near You.

And I'm pretty sure this is what most teams used.

This goes for anyone: PM me some contact information (name and e-mail, mostly) and I'll figure out how to get you added to the Codex team (on the mailing list, mostly).

Count me in, PM sent. I should be able to take Jan 18 off of work, actually since I have a bunch of days I need to get rid of. Should be fun.

Whilst I managed to be away over this weekend and thus missed the big finish, I'd like to say how much I enjoyed the chance to visit puzzles I simply didn't see in the original hunt, and to see how people tackled some I did do.

And on that subject, I'd like to put in a counter-offer to people - I'm currently hunting with Team Unseen, which is something more of a midtable team than the big hitters (like Codex, Manic Sages, SETEC or Palindrome) who are seriously contending for victory, even though I appreciate that Codex are far less likely to be trying that hard for a while... I started out hunting with Codex (that's how I ended up here in the first place) and then managed to leave the year before they won - and thus missed what may have been my one chance to write MIT puzzles!

The tradeoff is that, being a much smaller team, there is a decent chance that you get to actually work on a puzzle you enjoy without someone swooping in and solving it from underneath, sometimes without you even being aware of it happening. Revenge most foul! On the other hand, this means that we take longer in "unlocking" puzzles, although if the new pattern of keeping the hunt open until essentially the closing ceremony regardless of when it is technically solved is going to continue to be the norm, that makes that feel much less of an issue.

So if you'd like to do the Hunt with a team who definitely aren't going to win (not that I don't think we wouldn't like to, but the probability is low!), then that's an alternative... I know that there are several other Team Unseen people on the GL.

I'm open to joining any team that will have me. I've PMed LK already, but if he doesn't think Codex is right for me, I'm happy to join Team Unseen.

Unfortunately, my ability to make final leaps is not all that great, and I can neither do advanced math nor program. I'm very happy to do grunt work, however, and I'm pretty persistent.

I won't be offended if you want to go to a smaller team. No matter what team you're on, you'll get plenty of solving time. It's just a fun time being on site no matter who you're with.

I offered to join Codex first, so I'll stick with that if you will have me LK. I was at least halfway helpful on CISRA, I hope.

I plan to have a fun time being not on site, in fact nearly halfway around the world from MIT (at Bengalore, India).

Given that I'm in Mass, I wonder if I could be on-site (at least for some of that weekend). Do they let anybody show up? How does that work?

As I understand it, they have to smuggle you in under cover of darkness, preferably in separate packages that can be reassembled on site.

Given the brilliance of some of the folks involved, I might actually agree to that.

Yeah, anyone can show up, for any amount of time. Codex usually has two to three rooms on campus where people congregate with their laptops. Coming from someone who has done it completely off-site some years and completely on-site in others, I wholeheartedly recommend the latter. I fly halfway across the country to do it, if that tells you anything.

If you're planning to be on site, you might as well try to make it for the opening skit.

Friday (which is, what, the 18th?) at noon, traditionally in Lobby 7...I haven't heard otherwise.

Thanks, I should add that I'll probably chicken out. I'm fairly phobic of social interaction, and the thought of meeting lots of new people is already making my skin crawl.

Then you'll be in good company. The MIT Hunt takes an antisocial pastime, and turns it social.

Anyone want to take a shot at 2011's puzzles while we wait?

EDIT: New thread for this is up.
