I'm pretty sure this is UNIT, not UNITED (tagged player =it)

ANSWER UNIT OF CURRENT = A

So we get COMPLEMENTING A BEATING HEART

I feel so out of my league. I tried all of those and only got three. At least I understand most of them once I see it, but could you explain these?

rounding -- 5. Before the beep, our relatively natural numbers are ringing.

answer -- 7. Reply to earn updates without embedded software.

united -- 8. One middle rung tagged player.
(I get all of this except for player = ed. Or is "it" being treated as a verb, so ited is the past participle?)

I thought El was treating "it" as a verb (he loves inventing verbs), but as Thok pointed out, the correct solution is UNIT, with tagged player = IT. (When you tag a player you say "you're it".)

answer -- 7. Reply to earn updates without embedded software.

Updates is an anagram indicator (I guess), so "reply to" is the straight definition, "earn" anagrams to "aner", and "without embedded software" indicates that software=sw should be embedded in "aner" to get "answer".

rounding -- 5. Before the beep, our relatively natural numbers are ringing.

Again El and his creative anagram indicators Wink. "our relatively" = "rou", "N" is the set of natural numbers, put this before "the beep" = "ding", and get "ringing" = "rounding".

I am strongly against verbizing!!

Thanks for the explanations. (I suppose I could have read all the notes following your summary, where these were all explained. I'm a little too excited waiting to watch my Patriots win the AFC Championship to be all that focused.)

I'm still a little stuck on ringing as a definition for rounding. Enthusiastic Grin

Given Elethiomel's track record I think we can assume the final clue is another &lit. One that almost works is:
THROAT
where 'thro' is archaic for 'through/thru' which at a stretch could mean complementing, plus 'A' plus 'T' as the heart of 'beating'.

It might not be the intended answer but I've seen (and written) much worse!

Sure. It helped that "unit of current" made more sense than "united of current"

Or more likely:
BREATH
Complementing 'A' = B + beating heart = REATH

Excellent!
