Since For Sale! has gone over fairly well, I thought I would try out another auction game I picked up recently, called High Society. Each player begins the game with 11 money cards:
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
Players bid on a deck consisting of the following 16 cards.
Point Cards: 1 - 10
Doublers: 3 of them. They double your point total.
Negative cards: Fire [1/2 your total], Scandal [-5], Thief [Take your best point card]
Each round a random card will be drawn from the deck to be auctioned.
Winner from the previous round starts the bid.
When you make a bid, you can play as many money cards from your hand as you like , but you cannot pick up cards unless you pass for the round .
In other words, if I bid 6 one round, and it comes back to me with a bid of 18, I cannot "trade" my bid of 6, for a bid of 20. But I can add, say the 4 and 10, to bring my total to 20. If you pass, you pick up all your bid and pay nothing for the round. Only the winner pays.
Exception: During the bids for the 3 negative cards, the auction works differently. As soon as ANY player passes, that player pays nothing, takes the negative card, and everyone ELSE pays. Think of it this way: You're paying to keep your name out of the paper. If you don't pay, you get the scandal]
Two Quick notes about the thief card. He does not steal doublers or other negative cards, only point cards. If you do not have any, he stays with you until you get one. He then immediately steals it.
The game ends immediately when the 4th multiplier is drawn [The 3 doubles, and the fire]. It is not auctioned.
Last place is the player [or players] with the least remaining money.
Among the other players, the winner is the one with the most points.
Tie goes to best individual point card.
Repeat: If you have the least money, it is irrelevant how many points you have. You automatically lose.
Any interest?
1. Referee: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
2. MatthewV: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
3. Lexprod: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
4. Scurra: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
5. Zag: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
Round 1: Doubler.

So if you have to take a 'bad' card you don't have to pay at all, even if had bid earlier?
And if you pass once, are you out or can you jump in again?

Zag: Unlike for sale, only one card is auctioned off per round. If you pass, you pay nothing and get nothing.
Lexprod: Right, if you pass on a bad card you pay nothing, everyone else pays their previous bid, and you get the bad card.
If you pass, you're out for the round. |

Oh, that sentence means you cannot pick up any BIDDING cards you played unless you pass, so you can't switch out a 1 bid for a 3, you'd instead have to add a 2 if you wanted to make it a 3 total bid. _________________ I'll have a P please... |

| Oh. I thought it was saying that on any turn that you pass, you get to draw more (money) cards -- essentially a temptation to flirt with that "lowest cash" situation, hoping to pick up one big money card before the game ends. |

| Ah yes, perhaps I shouldn't have referred to them both as cards. You pick up your bidding cards, and pay nothing. |

Ok. Now a question on the negative card bidding:
Say there are 4 players, A, B, C, D, and it is A's turn to start the bidding when a negative card comes up.
A bids 10, B 11, C 12 and D 13, then A passes and takes the card (and, I assume, picks up his 10). Do B, C, and D only pay the amount that they bid or do they all pay 13?
Is the Thief card applied immediately? Or do you have to keep it and apply it at the end of the game (when you might have a bigger point card than the biggest you have right now)? What if you have no point cards when it comes up? You actually did answer this in the original note. NVM.
Anyway, I'll play. |

| You pay in cards not amounts. So paying 4,6 is different than 10 even though they are the same amount. Right? |

Right, by the "no change" rule, if you pay 4, 6 you are more restricted in further rounds. _________________ Jan 21st, 2008: The pillaging continues.

I guess I'm feeling masochistic enough for this one too. And I agree, 4 or 5 is much the best number.

Zag, you would only pay what your previous bid had been. So if goes:
1, 10, 20, Pass ; A pays 1, B pays 10, and C pays 20. |

All right. Let's see how well this goes. I've randomize turn order, and randomized the deck.
1. Referee: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
2. MatthewV: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
3. Lexprod: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
4. Scurra: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
5. Zag: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25
Bid 1: Doubler [Doubles your final total score]
Referee, you are first to bid. |
