I'm painting a chair that looks similar to this one:

The seat is going to have the Union Jack on it, but I'm not quite sure what to do with the rest of it. The solid piece at the top of the back is too narrow for another depiction of the flag to look good on it -- I was thinking making it dark blue. For the spindles, would mostly blue, with the knobby things being red with a thin white border look good, or too much? Should the rungs/spindles just be dark blue so that the focus is on the flag painting itself?

For the back, use the pattern for the Union Jack, but just a cross section. Don't reduce it.

It is the fractal chair. It needed redone, and being in a prominent location in my house, I didn't think the fractal really fit in anymore. I'd go with irish flag if that was more visually interesting. Though maybe I'll get another chair and put a harp on it...

Even as an Irishman, I must admit I'm jealous of the Union Jack. Such a good distinctive and timeless design.
My only consolation is that the St. Patrick's cross is included in it (the red X).

It's called the Union Flag. It's only called the Union Jack if it is being flown on a boat.

Note: this is obviously a really stupid detail that no-one in their right mind would care about. So sue me.

Maybe if you lived in the 1600s, but that's no longer the case.

Well, if the chair were on a boat, then you could call it the Union Jack.

Personally I like Quailman's suggestion, not that it's running against much competition so far. If you go with that, I'm thinking solid blue for rungs & spindles, so things don't look too 'busy'.

Then again, I may not be the best person to get advice from on this. Until now, I didn't even know those things were called spindles.
