Actually, I am marking this now...
It wasn't hard for someone...and Suspence is apparently good at guessing.
I don't deliberately make harder rounds...I have a large collection of questions and just select some at random, so any one round is going to be as difficult as any other round - on average. |

Olympiad Round 3 - Answers
1. What is a humidor?
a. an Ancient Egyptian farm implement
b. a Cigar Box
c. an Electronic Component
d. a Portable Heater
Slightly confusing as it's better known as a humidity controlled room to store cigars but only one player failed to get this right.
2. The Danjon scale measures what?
a. Brightness of lunar eclipses
b. Pain
c. Physical exertion
d. Religious belief
Found this by accident and thought it could be interesting.
3. Who is the lead singer of rock band AC/DC?
a. Brett Anderson
b. Brian Ferry
c. Brian Johnson
d. Jim Kerr
4. In an English scrabble set, how many different letters have just ONE tile.
a. 4
b. 5
c. 6
d. 7
Letters J, K, Q, X, Z have just one tile each. Half the players probably missed the K.
5. Which is the largest island in the Mediterranean sea?
a. Corsica
b. Cyprus
c. Sardinia
d. Sicily
6. Which element is directly below Silver in the periodic table?
a. Gold
b. Iridium
c. Palladium
d. Platinum
One guess each at the wrong alternatives, yes, it's the obvious one.
7. Who is the father of actress Angelina Jolie?
a. Dustin Hoffman
b. Robert Redford
c. Roy Scheider
d. Jon Voight
Roy Scheider was the popular wrong answer.
8. The 'Lev' is the currency in which country?
a. Bulgaria
b. Hungary
c. Poland
d. Romania
9. How many people have walked on the moon?
a. 10
b. 12
c. 14
d. 16
e. 18
I should have put zero as an option...for the moonlanding hoax believers. Do we have any here?
10. Which sport does the South African Oscar Pistorius participate in?
a. Athletics
b. Cricket
c. Rugby
d. Tennis
Known as the "Blade Runner" as he has no lower legs. I thought he might be famous enough, but at least this question stopped Scurra scoring a perfect 10.

The really funny bit of this was that the evening of the day I sent my answers I was at a train station which had one of those animated ad sequences running down the escalator, and who do you think was being used to promote whatever it was (a perfume I think?) with his name prominently displayed... I laughed out loud and then had to explain to my colleague why this was funny. _________________

Apparently he got the blade runner a few hours after submitting his answers!
I was surprised you didn't get the "men on the moon" question.

I would be shocked if anyone had got this one wrong.

d. A type of Transport

e. Superior
8. In braille, which letter is represented by the following code (where X is a raised dot)?

A tricky one that players might guess but few will know.
9. What is a Baobab?

b. An African Deer
c. A Tree
d. An underwater volcanic vent
10 In standard poker, how many possible combinations of 5 cards will result in a flush (flush + straight flush).

Scores
======
9 Scurra - The new champion
8 MNO
7 Dented Ford and referee
2 jesternl
Congratulations to Scurra for winning the second Quiz Olympiad. MNO finished just 1 point behind and says "second is a victory to me when Scurra is here". Dented Ford and referee share 3rd place.
Unfortunately, jesternl had a nightmare last round but finished 5th overall.

Those scores are out of 49 as we had a void question in round 2. Scurra had an 85% hit rate with his answers. Impressive.
