IT IS HERE!
Welcome to the premiere for Top GL'er!
but lets not get too much in to fanfare right at this moment, lets get to the first challenge! Sometime I do get a song in my head, and I jsut can't remember the name of it, it tends to become a mini-puzzle to try and figure it out...
MUSIC
Contestants will have to design a puzzle using music as the basis of the puzzle.
The puzzle doesn't have to center around a specific song, or even genre, but it must have some element of music around it.
You may use audio. You may use lyrics. you may use notes on a scale. These are just examples.
The winner of this challenge will have their puzzle on the Front Page of The Grey Labyrinth and will receive Immunity for this round. One (or more) people will also be eliminated this round.
Deadline for this challenge will be at August 27th 2012 at 12:01am Keep in mind that all submissions will need to go to topgler[at]gmail.com with the first email being the puzzle, with "MUSIC PUZZLE [GL user]" in the subject line, and the second email being the solution, marked "MUSIC PUZZLE [GL user] Solution"
Just remember the majority of contestants will have to agree on a time extension. Questions for the first challenge can be addressed to any of the judges ( Dented Ford, Undercover Monk, or Myself) but will only be answered in this thread. Good luck contestants!

Two more things, I urge you to reread these two rules:

One last thing before we go, If you STILL want to get in on this, there is still time, you can sign up and do a puzzle , but the deadline stays the same for you. Once the first challenge has passed, it is over.

Since the theme seems quite broad, I'd like to check this...
The examples seem "musical" - audio, notes, lyrics, etc. My current puzzle idea uses "music" - as an example, say I made a cryptogram out of the names of songs. There's nothing "musical" about it, but it does utilize "music".
Would this be considered acceptable to meet the theme?

and we won't know for sure, since we may be eliminating more than one competitor each challenge.
At most we will have 8 challenges. i would suggest putting all of your efforts in each puzzle, because any one could be your last...

Can I ask what the judges' position is regarding a puzzle being possibly broken? A deadline of a week doesn't really allow much room for double-checking - I normally have my puzzles test-solved because I know how easy it is to make elementary mistakes - even the MIT puzzle hunt occasionally has to issue errata!

If there is still time on the clock, you are always welcome to change (or even scrap totally) your submission. Kepp in mind though the final version of a puzzle at deadline is what we look at, nothing more. If you do change a puzzle, mark it as an edit in the subject line, so we know.

I'm disappointed that people need extensions already, but of course I'd rather see people deliver something than drop out before we even started. So I'm on board for an extension.
I hope the judges take my prompt delivery into account when evaluating my simple puzzle. |

I rushed to get something in on time, but given my current schedule it is likely I'll need an extension later (should I survive).
That being the case I'd be OK with allowing an extension now if it affords me the opportunity to gain an extension later.
So a tactical approval of an extension from me. 
(Who knows? Maybe I'll have time to improve my own submission, though that's unlikely)
