Do we have an idea of when the judging will be complete?

Also, is there any chance we could have the theme of the next puzzle now? It would help cut down on the overall length of the competition. I can't speak for everyone, but if I start writing a puzzle only to find out I got cut, I won't really mind...I can always save it for later use in VSP.

I'm still waiting on both judges at this point. we should be done at most in another week.

The next puzzle will be headed by Judge Undercover Monk and will be posting it hopefully shortly.

I'd welcome that too. I'm quite busy at work and would welcome the opportunity to make an early start when I can find some time.

I thought long and hard about what my puzzle would be. I wanted something different but up my ally enough I could be counted as an expert on the theme. But my interests are varied and pretty eccentric. But when it came down to it there is one place on the web that I spend as much and maybe more time on then the GL. TVtropes .org. so why not use this as a platform to share the most wonderful waste of time I have found in internet land.

Tropes Challenge

So have you ever noticed how the same plots and characters appear over and over again in movies and TV and even literature. Find it interesting that the Lion King is basically a retelling of MacBeth or how every movie Villian makes the same mistakes over and over. Welcom to the fascinating world of Tropes. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage

TVtropes is a website I spend countless hours on and be warned I take no responsibility for any competitor who ends up wasting their life on the site. There is even an article on the site about how dangerous it can be. so please read this yahoo article before attempting to research the site. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

http://voices.yahoo.com/tv-tropes-bad-place-will-ruin-life-5901300.html

Anyway on to the challenge. Your task should you choose to accept it i to base your puzzle around a particular trope(s). Note that on the site are pages about media and then lists what tropes they contain. That is not what im looking for. I dont want a puzzle based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail but you could do a puzzle based on the trope Amusing Injuries which is used in the movie (Black Night). If you need more info on what exactly a trope is...well there's a page for that too. happy hunting.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Trope

Feel free to pm me (Undercover Monk) with any questions.

It's possible I may never forgive you for this. I went cold-turkey on tv tropes some years ago and vowed never to return. Argh. Isn't The Lion King based on Hamlet?

Yes I dont know how I got that confused =( Lion King was a retelling of Hamlet. not Macbeth. The sequel more aggrediously takes it plot from Romeo and Juliet.

no actual deadline yet, but it will be a week from the finishing of the judging.

Also it is VERY likely ( haven't confirmed with the other judges, but it seems like the right thing to do) anyone who posted a puzzle in the first round will make it to the second round.

We will be trying to figure out what we are going to do with Jbv, Gomez, and Zag.

Yes you can. Using multiple tropes is fine as long as it is the tropes themselves as opposed to the media.

72 hours from this post and I'll declare a winner from what we have for judging. from then you will have one week from that post.

The three people that didn't send in a puzzle are eliminated.

Jbvntx, Gomez, and Zag, I'd say clean up your area, but you never made it there. Good luck on your puzzling!

I'm finding it difficult to think of an interesting yet solvable puzzle that doesn't involve trawling through all possible tropes to find one to fit some criteria.

I have the basic puzzle idea for the next puzzle, but I would really, really like the feedback on the first one before proceeding. Almost everyone just ignored my puzzle on the other thread and I have no idea at all how you judge puzzles.

So far, one judge wasn't terribly fond of it, the other picked you for being on the top. So honestly, it looks like we aren't sure what to give you on feed back other than this: We tend to be fickle and strange about our choices. Wink

DF has hit upon the expediency of stealing some commentary from other judges to pad out his own. But hey! a lot of what was said would otherwise have been said again in a less succinct way. And much later.

After looking, I think we have a winner for the first round.

The Top four puzzles were Scurra, Groza's, esme's and Jack_ians.

Some Quick Comments about The top:

esme -
Quote:
"Well constructed, and built from musical stave, with a deceptively straightforward conversion from music to words to puzzle to answer.'
" I don't know, for me, it was interesting, but not a puzzle i really liked as well as the others"
"esme is definitely one of my top picks"

Scurra -
Quote:
"This is one of those puzzles that after solving, you get an amazing sense of accomplishment. It has just enough of difficulty to stump you for a while, but you get your AHA! moment in the end."

" Once again, amazing puzzle, love the style, The only thing I would tweak is the overall presentation of the puzzle, it seemed a little, dare I say? One note. I am used to Scurra dressing up his puzzles a bit, and I think that was a little lost here."

Groza -
Quote:
"My god I love this puzzle! He manages to turn a puzzle into me pulling out my keyboard and playing a song!"
" I love how Groza's pictures of the pipes were notched to make it possible to figure it out, the tools were right there in the beginning, and it just all around a wonderful puzzle!"

Jack_Ian -
Quote:
" This was a well thought out puzzle, in that I really liked the two different tracks playing on each side, and was a great gimmick to have them line up with their titles. "
" I personally liked this puzzle, it wasn't a true "WOW" moment, but it was nicely done."
" An excellent puzzle and a fave of mine!"

Each of the judges had our personal favorites, but we all agreed that this person's puzzle was the best of this round...;..

CONGRATULATIONS TO JACK_IAN!!!!!

You receive Immunity this round, and will be the first puzzle to be put on the front page!

The DEADLINE for the next challenge will be October 4th at 12:01AM EDT

I find it quite amusing that of the four puzzles actually singled out here, only one of them was actually solved on the "solving" thread!

(Hopefully people may now head back and have another look there. I am still struggling badly with the two that seem to require identifying tunes!)

If we had to choose a puzzle to be eliminated from this round, it likel
y would have been Suspence's 100 cryptics. We felt that it really didn't hit the theme as well as the others, and honestly while yes it was a puzzle, it felt like an exercise in solving cryptics quickly then a fun and enjoyable puzzle.

If i were choosing on my own, Jack would not have won, Groza would have. I loved that puzzle. Yours was a very VERY close second. However Jacks was the only one well liked by all three of us.

Puzzle sent.
There's every likelihood that I will need to correct it after I try test-solving it, but I thought it best to send what I had in case real life takes over and prevents me from doing that before the deadline.

I have no musical talent or knowledge whatsoever, so designing a "musical" puzzle was pretty much out of the question. I've been pretty focused on cryptic writing lately, so that is what came out.

Knowing that the judges were solving individually now, I realize that 100 cryptics would have been tedious. The style of puzzle I wrote was much better suited to a group collaborative effort, which we got in the solving thread. I'm hoping that the solvers enjoyed it, at the very least.

its not that we didn't enjoy it. Since the three judge's lives don't sync up as much as we'd like, we tend to solve them individually. It also helps to be objective when we judge the puzzles

The bad part of that is the two things that happened in this challenge, Your cryptic wall ( which none of us together could even come close to solving in a reasonable time and damn near impossible on our own), and the fact that Jack_Ian won, even though individually as judges we each would have picked a different winner I think. (that also shows how well the quality of the puzzles were this round, IMO)
