(I'll defer to our UK/European members on that, but that is certainly how I hear it used while watching EPL soccer.)

I am not from the UK, but I do often use a British English dictionary for definitions. As such, the second definition for the word 'sport' in Collins English Dictionary (online) does define the word in the singular for the sport-activites considered collectively.
